First post to forum Letrozole and poor sleep

My routine mammogram was not actioned due to lockdown, when restrictions were lifted i was called for it. To cut a long story short bc was found and i had to have a left side mastectomy. I have been taking Letrozole since my op and have a prosthesis. I have put on weight and lost my self esteem along with my breast and i find it difficult to sleep well. But I have to keep smiling to friends and my very few family members. Stay strong lovely ladies. AudreyP

Hi Audrey P, Stay strong. You will find that gradually you will start to feel a little better. Baby steps. I also have had a mastectomy and lymph node clearance. I also have a prosthesis and have been taking Letrozole for nearly the last four years. Letrozole has lots of side effects for me including not sleeping well and putting on weight but I have decided that is better than the possible alternative to not taking it for another six and a bit years. I don’t know where you bought your prosthesis but mine is from Amoena, they are online and have a “shop” near Southampton, they also have lovely tops and swim wear. I find if I look ok, I actually feel better. I do hope you have support from friends and family members. Remember it is alright not to always be smiling. You will certainly find plenty of support on this forum. Please take care. Sending hugs from Sunshine 21.

Dear Audrey, a friend recommended that I listen to Sarah Blondin’s meditations. The series of 36 short meditations is called Live Awake and they are available free on Apple podcasts. You’ll need to download the podcast app. If you don’t have an apple phone or ipad, you may be able to buy her book. I have found them very helpful. Wishing you all the best, Tough

Dr Liz O’Riordan has a blog and YouTube channel. She has just realised a video on Letrozole and Anastrozole. Hope this helps.

I had awful side effects from the Letrozole, (I’m 78 now, diagnosed in 2021) so much so I came off them for a month. When I went back on them, the aches and pains, thin hair, very thin skin etc, started again. So I was offered Aromasin (Exemestane), instead. I have to say, this has been much better tolerated. There have been trials where women have been changed to this drug after tamoxifen, and shown to have been better tolerated and had better outcomes. Maybe speak to your team, it seems that Letrozole or Tamoxifen are the first ports of call depending on if you are pre- or post- meno. I know for m at my age it is quality of life not length of life that is important now for me.

Thanks Lucy, I know I am really not alone. AudreyP

Hi Tappin I am 72 so it was Letrozole for me. It is the hot sweats and flushes that get me down even after 2.5 years on the drug.

As I think I mentioned before, I take Aromasin now, and find things better. However, I take it every other day- half of the drug has left the body after 24 hours-it’s half-life. this is not recommended by my doctor, but for me it is quality of life, not quantity at 78. I am well and keep busy, and now have few side effects from the meds, although it has put my BP up so my BP meds have been increased! If it’s not one thing it’s another!
