HI all
I had my first TAXOTERE last Thursday.
For a few days now, my throat has been really sore, it hurts to drink and swallow.
My tongue is also very sore .
Has anyone had experience of this…are there any remedies that may help, eg. glycerine and honey?
Hi Yes im the same my onc gave me a prescription for Oraldine mouth wash, it has antiseptic in but no alcohol so kinder on the sores, Ice lollies and sugar free sweets seem also to help.
Do keep an eye on it though in case an infection, my onc also gave me a back up prescription of Mycostatin oral suspension, I live in Spain but I think the name is the same, you maybe should ask for this?
Naz I get this on Tax and I get it with bad thrush - do you have thrush (cream coloured spots on your mouth) if so you will need a prescription. Beyond that I use Diflam and painkillers and try to restrict my diet to soup and yogurt - doesn’t help hunger any !
sorry I can’t be of more help it is a big issue for me too ! xx
I am having my first tax on Friday. Has anyone tried sucking an ice lolly during treatment to prevent mouth problems - I will try it but would be nice to find out if anyone has had success with it.
I had this with chemo and i am sad to say it has continued somewhat since i stopped active treatment. I couldnt eat or move my tongue without pain killers. Difflam spray for your throat helped and mine was worse at night too.
Ive since been told its acid reflux and i am now on lansoperazole and that works!!
Hi Naz,
I had a dreadful painful tongue and sore throat on my first Tax. However I did also get thrush 4 out of 6 treatments (x3 FEC and x3 Tax). My tongue was cratered with blisters and sores and I couldn’t eat properly for a few days because it was so painful.
The thrush was treated with Fluconazole but I asked for Nystatin oral suspension on the last two and it helped prevent it. Also I was gargling with either Difflam or salt/soda bic mouthwashes.
They also said they would reduce my Tax dose to 80% because of my mouth and hands (red raw, itchy, peeling) and that helped a lot. I only then had a slightly sore, furry tongue after that.
Good luck

Finty I sucked ice lollies or ice in water during every chemo and had no mouth or throat problems at all.I took the lollies and ice cubes in a wide necked flask which I kept in the fridge overnight before putting lollies in.I found pure fruit juice[Tesco finest]were the best.
I also get a sore tongue and mouth. I think i breathe thru my mouth at nite as nose blocked, which doesn’t help. I have also found that I’m not drinking enough. However, only one tax to go so will go with symptoms and drink more!
I had a really sore mouth with FEC and was given Difflam mouthwash and Fluconazole tablets which help enourmously. Sucking ice lollies helped as well, especially pineapple flavoured ones.
I also found changing to a very soft toothbrush and a childrens fruity toothpaste helped as I couldnt bear my normal mint toothpaste in my mouth as it felt like it was burning. xxxx
Thanks Jane
My throat feels better, but my mouth and tongue are sore still.
I bought some Kingfisher toothpaste and it doesn’t sting as much as normal at least.
Why does the mouth take such a battering?
