One of the ladies on the forum has asked me to post this for her. She has made it herself so knows it works and said it is very comfortable.
FUNKY HIPPY FLEECE HAT
(this hat is lovely and warm and also very soft to wear)
-
You will need a piece of fleece fabric measuring approximately 22” long x 24” wide.
-
Lay the piece of material flat and draw a line in tailor’s chalk 3” below one short edge
-
Next, with sharp scissors and a steady hand, make careful cuts about ¼” wide down to where you have drawn the chalk line.
-
Then, fold the right sides of this piece of material together and sew a ¼” seam down the side, (starting just at the base of the cuts)to make a wide ‘tube’.
-
Turn the tube inside out, so that the seam you have just sewn is hidden, then gather all the cut strips together in a bunch and secure them at the base by tying a space piece of material also ¼” wide tightly around them a couple of times, and securing them all with a knot (this makes the tassel) .
-
Next cut a piece measuring 9 ½” in depth off the bottom (other end) of the tube.
-
You now have one long piece (with tassel already made) and one short piece.
-
Take the short piece and fold it in half horizontally, placing the wrong sides of the material together and right sides outside (this will be your hat brim).
-
Then pop the short folded ‘brim’ inside the long piece of material (turned inside out so that the wrong side is showing) and match the sewn seams together (three thicknesses of material).
-
Now sew the three thicknesses of material together horizontally with a ½” seam.
Turn this folded short piece up and it will form a brim (the three-thicknesses of the seam give structure and support to the shape of the hat).
YOUR HAT IS FINISHED!
Note:
Take your time making your cuts as neat as possible (you will need very sharp scissors and a steady hand).
If you wanted to customise your hat you could join a contrasting piece of fleece the same depth as the tassel (3”) make cuts the same width in that as well, and have a two-toned tassel, or you could make your tassel longer if you wished.
