Hi, I had a single mastectomy 8 weeks ago and I believe the next step will be to start chemo and radiotherapy before long when I get to see my oncology team, but my husbands suggested a quick week away somewhere sunny before the next part kicks off.. my question is are you allowed to fly 8 weeks post op or is there any risks involved ? And has anyone done the same between treatments? What’s insurance like if you haven’t started any other treatment yet? Is it wise?? Thanks in advance

I flew 5 weeks after my single mastectomy and was given the go ahead by my surgeon. I was healing well so she felt there was no need to avoid it. I had to wear compression Stockings, avoid alcohol during the flight, keep well hydrated and get for a short walk every 30 minutes (we had a 5hr flight). For instance I used a company called insurancewith who were much cheaper than everyone else. I paid around £200 for myself, Husband and two young children, I would’ve just had a higher excess to pay if needed. I went for 2 weeks in October and then started my chemo 4 weeks later x

Hi. So I have annual travel insurance and when I wanted to fly post my mastectomy (but still before radiotherapy) all they asked was if I was cleared to fly by my surgeon. She was happy as it was over 5wks post op and everything was healing well. The fact I was still awaiting further treatment was not an issue.
I know it varies from insurer to insurer but hopefully you can be given the go ahead! My surgeon was very supportive of me going away and giving me some normality before the next phase.

I fly early June and will be 8 weeks post mastectomy, my BCN said it was ok but to wear stockings and take regular walks, move ankles.
Do take advice from your team and enjoy your time away.
I got insurance through All Clear.

I found flying after surgery way less dramatic than I feared. My softie shifted a bit on a long flight, so I tucked a light scarf in my bag and that made me feel less on show. Pressurised cabins didn’t bother my scar, but I did get a bit puffier than usual, so I wore a looser bra. If anything feels weird, a quick stretch walk usually settles things.
