Flying after treatment over

Flying after treatment over My husband has booked me the wonderful treat of a holiday to Thailand 6 weeks after I finish my FEC chemo, to celebrate our silver wedding. I know I am a very lucky lady but I am anxious to know if this is sensible or not… any help much appreciated.
Thank you Sue xx

Are you on Tamoxifen? Hi Sue

I flew post op in late July 2004 and was advised to take low dose aspirin and wear flight sox. When I next flew I was mid chemo and did flight sox again, then after chemo when I had started tamoxifen I did the aspirin and flight sox thing.

So it may depend on whether you are on tamoxifen? I suppose that being nearish the end of chemo might make you more open to germs but I flew in the middle of mine, to Edinburgh from Manchester, and was ok.

It is amazing how everyday things you used to take for granted have to be thought about now. Good luck and hope you have a great holiday.

Love Pamela

Sorry to butt in but … what is the problem with tamoxifen and flying?

Mcgle

Tamoxifen Something to do with slight increased risk in deep vein thrombosis - I think it is listed on the many side effects. If I have got that wrong I apologise

Pamela

Thanks, Pamela Am on tamoxifen, and am flying next month, so perhaps I should dig out those oh-so-attractive anti DVD socks we all wore in hospital!!

—Flight Socks —Hi Sue I was advised to wear flight socks to our Holiday in Cuba in May also half asprin tablet per day before you fly but I would check with your G.P first.

Enjoy your hoilday you like all of us deserve it after all the treatments and anxieties we have had over the last few months.

yes —Have just been put on tamoxifen and was told by doc to be aware that there is a slightly higher risk of DVT when taking it.
Unfortunately there is very little chance I will be flying to warmer climes in the near future!!!

— mcgle, those hospital socks are just gorgeous, aren’t they?

I’m flying to South Africa at the end of this month and my bc nurse has advised me to do the flight socks and aspirin thing as I’m on tamoxifen and it does increase the risk of blood clots in a similar way to the pill and HRT. I’ve been told to take low dose aspirin for a week before I go and a week after I come back.

Me too I’m flying off to Lanzarote on 20th April, and was advised about flight sock even though I’m not on Tamoxifen yet, I take 75mg asprin every day anyway so thats not a problem I dug out my lovely bottle green socks from hospital and they are all washed and ready for me…Hope to hell I dont get searched at customs!!!

just a thought…if anyone needs insurance cover mid chemo Freedom Travel in Cambridge do an excellent deal…first quote I had from another company was £942!!!..that was just for a week, and double what I paid for the flippin Holiday…I knew it would be a lot more expensive but didnt think I would need a second Mortgage!!, Freedom did it for £112 which covers any eventuality for me so I was really pleased.they also insure anyone else who is travelling with you at good rates…£19 for hubby and £10 for daughter…thought I would just tell you about this.

Have a nice break Morag Glad to hear about your holiday Morag - you deserve it after what you have been through last few months.

I never brought my lovely sox home with me from the hospital, perhaps I should have done! Don’t know what happened to them.

Assuming I am done with EVERYTHING (Rads and all) inside the year I want to negotiate some holiday time with work before going back. Partner has booked some time off in November already so fingers crossed!

Love and kisses
Linda

long haul flight after treatment Hi everyone -

I have just joined this site, it is great isn’t it. You are all so amazing. I have been very emotional reading your experiences, I have been fairly well thus far - well relatively speaking.

I had mastectomy and am just coming to the end of my CMF and due to E and CMF missed out on being with my daughter in the US when she gave birth to our first granchild.
They did come over at Christmas with a tiny tiny baby and now I am desparate to go and visit. I am planning to fly to Florida in April - my treatment finishes in 19 days time with last C tab. I have to admit to being very anxious about the flight.

Anyone else done a long haul so soon after treatment?
How did it go?

Jamie

— —Sue

I flew to florida 4 weeks after finishing Chemo. I had to get a form signed by my Oncologist for my insurance as we had booked the holiday before i was diagnosed. I wore my flight socks and made sure I got up and did stretching exercises during the flight and only drank water. I have just got back from lanzarote and did the same so i’m sure you will be ok.

— I flew to Italy 2 weeks after mastectomy with consultants blessing. He didn’t say anything about wearing the socks and I hadn’t then started on tamoxifen. But for a long haul flight I think it a good idea. Have a lovely break. xxx

—long haul flight after chemo —Thanks chaps,

I am anxious about flying but to spend time with my new grandaughter is worth it. Having to take BC into account for everything now. Ah well a new chapter in Lifes rich tapestry. I find I am learning to be more laid back and enjoy every day. And take time for me.
I will have a brill time.

Happy travelling I travelled to Thailand between chemo and surgery (much to bc nurse’s horror, as I went uninsured as I knew that they would charge me a fortune… not recommending it, just OK for me then).

Just a further tip, is that I was advised by the physio just after surgery to try to do the some of the arm exercises whenever on a long haul flight to reduce the chances of getting lymphodema.

Happy travelling to one and all!
