Flying on tamoxifen

Hi all,

I was diagnosed triple positive IDC June 2023, all active treatment complete (last herceptin Dec 24) and have been on tamoxifen since November 2023, and will be on for 10 years.

I developed a blood clot in my arm from my PICC line during chemo, as this was caused by PICC line it wasn’t a reason to not start tamoxifen as it was a “mechanical” blood clot.

I am due to go to a wedding in Tenerife soon, and my oncologist seems to think 4.5 hour flight be okay as long as I move around, but my surgeon said he’d come off tamoxifen for the holiday (I believe you need to be off so long before and after also).

So now I am conflicted. I don’t want to come off tamoxifen for like 4 weeks just for a holiday, but equally don’t want to risk a blood clot.

My solution was fly to somewhere midway in Europe like mainland Spain or Portugal, then stay a night and fly to Tenerife the next day, and vice versa on way back (bonkers I know). Then I read that multiple short flights can be a risk too? I thought this would be okay as it’s only around 2.5 hours per flight, albeit 4 flights instead of 2 but none in same day.

I feel in such a predicament now, my oncologist said both are about similar risk which baffled me?

I’m so sorry I can’t help you with this as I haven’t had the same situation arise but I do hope that you can get to the wedding and enjoy it!
With best wishes x

Dear Lanna19

I’m so sorry I can’t help you, the last think you need is different opinions, maybe the breast cancer nurses on this site, maybe be able to offer advice.

I wish you well, and hopefully you will make the wedding with a well deserved break.

Please contact your team for definitive advice but I flew long haul to Asia with my doctor’s permission. I wore compression hose (30mm Hg) and got up and walked frequently. I even saw another passenger doing calisthenics in the back towards the restrooms! I didn’t go that far but maybe I should have!! ( I was too shy, but as long as we aren’t in anyone’s way, why not?)
Hope you have a marvelous time at the wedding.
Good luck and good health!
