I finished 20 sessions of radiotherapy 10 weeks ago and have been told that the first follow up appointment for breast radiotherapy (I had grade 3 tumour, WLE and sentinel node biopsy) is in 12 months time. From what I have read on various websites, and a conversation with a very pleasant helpline operator at BreastCancerCare, it seems to be general practice to have a follow up between 4 and 6 weeks after completion of radiotherapy. Has anyone else had such a long period between completion of radiotherapy and first review appointment with oncologist?
i have two appointment letters for the month after radiotherapy has finished. One is for the surgical team and one is for the oncology team. I have very similar treatment to you, but will also have tomaxifen. perhaps if you are not having any hormones they do not feel the need to see you? Or is it another sign of cuts.
oh another thought, i have rampant LCIS, they don’t treat that but they like to keep an eye on it, perhaps thats why I am being seen.
hi, i finished 15 treatments of radiotherapy last wednesday and they said i will have a follow up appointment through the post for 6-8 weeks time , so maybe ring and ask, also has anyone else been raw with open sores under the breast they were having treated ,not sure if its normal or if i should get it checked out ,mrs c
Mrsc, definitely get it checked out. It’s not uncommon but very sore. They may give you a gel to apply.
yes pop back in and see one of the nurses in the radiology department, that is a common place for the skin to break down, they will have dressings to put on. They are better than your GP because they see radiation sores every day and know what works best
Having had wle and chemo I have my last rad tomorrow (am on tamoxifen now) and I have an appointment to see my surgeon in January and then the oncologist a year later. That’s it. I think the onus is on me to contact them if I have any problems. It feels a little like I’ve been left bereft but it must vary across different regions.
