Am due to have my first mammogram after easter following a WLE last May then 3 weeks of rads. Have been well throughout but getting increasingly nervous as the mammogram looms. How long do you generally have to wait for your results after the mammogram? Can’t seem to think about anything else at the moment, guess this is normal.
Hi PT,
I had my first follow up mammogram at the beginning of March. I was really nervous as my Bad breast was still very sore, But it was actually ok and didn’t hurt any more than the first time I’d had it done. I was told It would be about 7-10 days after that I would receive my results via the post…I waited for nearly 3 weeks and then phoned the Breast surgeon’s secretary…she apologised as Docs had been on holiday and she was typing up letters from his dictation, My letter had gone in the post that day, but she read out the letter over the phone, every thing was fine…Try not to worry, easier said than done!! wishing you all the best…

Thanks for that Fiona. Nice to hear from someone who has just had a follow up. Like you my breast is still tender & lumpy which makes you feel more nervous but hopefully it won’t hurt either. Trying to keep upbeat just dreading the results coming. All the best to you too.

i had 2 wle. Finished my chemo (fec), and doing rads now;
anyway, i had my first review this week at C clinic, and was told that a breast takes about 6 months to heal from the rads/wles. hope this helps

Hi PT
I recently had a mammogram, ultrasound scan and got the results from the radiographer straightaway (think they know me pretty well by now!) and then saw my consultant who confirmed it all. I think each hospital is different but not having to wait really helps.
Good luck and thinking of you.

Hi PT. It’s always the waiting for results that’s sometimes worse than having the check-ups isn’t it? I had my follow-up mammogram 6 months after the op and I waited 2 weeks to go back for the results. Same last week. I’m fine, thank Goodness, but I found the second week particularly difficult to concentrate on anything and found myself getting upset in case they found something. Living after bc can make your mind play tricks and I find it hard to ignore aches and pains (in my hip at the moment) which might be the Tamoxifen anyway. I suppose one tried to take your mind off it by keeping busy - but isn’t it exhausting!! Hope you’re OK. x
Hi PT
i have been having annual mammos for the past 4 years since being diagnosed with a tumour in 2006… they have always taken about 3 weeks to get the results until last year when they phoned me 2 days after my mammo to make a repeat appt that week because the mammo looked suspicious and indeed i had a new tumour in the other side.
if you havent heard anything after a week or so id imagine where ever you are it would be normal… so no news is usually good news.
by the way i still have breast pain from surgery in 2006… 25% still have pain up to 1 year and 5% have pain up to 5 years following surgery
best of luck

I was diagnosed in Oct 2006 and I have an annual mammogram, plus a follow up with a Consultant at a review clinic about 10 - 14 days later. However, if there is anything suspicious on the mammogram I believe they contact you to give you an appointment for the main breast clinic within the week.
I still have breast pain following surgery as well, there is not a day when I don’t have an ache where I had the lump removed. My shoulder has also been zizzing away with nerve pain today.
Similar response to others… I was told that it could be up to SIX weeks until I got the results of my mammogram… do they not know how anxious a time the waiting period is?!! Anyway, for the first follow-up one I waited 3.5 weeks and only found out when I asked at an oncology appointment. Then for my second one, back in November I found out withing a few days, but only because my bcn took pity on me and chased it up - just going to show that they know the results, and that it’s just the admin procedures that can hold it up.
Waiting is horrible, however, I’m sure it’s “no news is good news” and if there was something to worry about, then you’d be contacted sooner. So if you’re kept waiting it’s maybe a good thing - not that it feels like it!

Had my follow up mammogram on Friday which was ok, not painful just tighter on my bad side. Re results all they would tell me was I would get them within the next 4 weeks…what a long 4 weeks this is going to be, specially as my cousin (same age as me) has just become terminal with bone secondarys. Talk about living on a knife edge. Hopefully next year I will be a bit more relaxed about waiting for results. Thanks for all the comments, am clinging on to no news is good news!!

Last time I went, the hospital had new mammogram equipment which was linked to a large computer screen in the corner of the room. It was much better as the machine didn’t have to squeeze your breasts so hard (previously I have ached for about a week afterwards on account of my WLE scar). This was far more comfortable and the machine had a big mood screen behind it which changed colour. I was so focused on this I forgot I was having a mammo.
