Gel Nails Query

Hi Everyone. Apologies but this might seem like a trivial question in the big scheme of things. I have recently had my surgery and will be having radiotherapy, starting in a few weeks. One of my favourites things before I was diagnosed with breast cancer was getting my nails done every month with Gel nails. I have not had them done since before surgery but wondering if I would be allowed to now that surgery is done. There seems to be very conflicting information online about whether you can have gel nails whilst undergoing radiotherapy, I won’t be having chemotherapy. Would be very grateful for any advice on this please. Many thanks x

I don’t absolutely know but can’t see why not . I had a pre treatment phone call about 2 weeks before the initial planning appointment - if you are having similar then there would be an opportunity to ask at that time xx

Hi Paddington1
Good luck on your pathway. I also love my gel nails but I did find that the gel didn’t stay on as well as usual for a couple of months during and after my Radiotherapy.

I’m 6 months out from Radiotherapy and all is now good regarding my gel nails. Not sure if it’s just me but a couple of months rest actually helped my nails I feel.

All the best x

Hi
I had gel nails throughout my surgeries and radiotherapy and no issues. I did go for French or pale and only on the last surgery did I leave one off so that the anaesthetist could easily read my pulse etc. I did check with my breast care nurse.
Only now diagnosed with secondary breast cancer and on chemo etc are my nails weaker and breaking.
Hope that helps.

Hi KazED. Thank you. I am sorry you are going through it again with secondary. I send you all my best wishes. I was told to remove my gels for surgery, I have an appointment with the breast cancer nurses tomorrow so I will see if the know about the radiotherapy. x

Hi
I have bio sculpture on my nails
It was removed prior to my surgery but when having my pre chemotherapy chat i asked if it was ok to use again and was told yes but to be careful about cuticles so i did a bit of research and used a product on my hands and toes throughout chemo and radiotherapy without any issues

Its called polybalm

My nail technician has known me for years and also took care of me which was a lovely pick me up when i needed it

I’ve had my nails gelled 3 weekly throughout chemo (EC&C then Docetaxal). I soon start radiotherapy and will continue.
There’s no real evidence for not having gels during chemo as long as no damage to quicks and definitely no reason not to during radiotherapy

Hi.
I had both Chemo & Radio, wasn’t till towards the end of all my treatment my nails started to get dry ridges, one nail in particular kept breaking. Asked my Oncologist, she said that’s a normal side-effect. Ridges eventually grew out & i had my nails done with Shellac/Gel 3 weeks ago, now off, nails survived ok. Probably best to play-it-by-ear, see how your nails go. Wishing you well.

Hi,

Not a silly question at all- I love getting my nails done ever month!
I had gel nails through-out my radiotherapy and it was never an issue or commented on by the radiotherapy staff.

Hope that helps :grinning: All the best for your radiotherapy!
