Gene testing petition

PETITION IS LIVE :growing_heart:

“No one should have to get cancer to get tested.”

Today I’m sharing the campaign I started called Test Us Too.

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 42 and sadly passed away at 51. After she died, I raised concerns and asked several times about genetic testing because of my family history, but due to incomplete family history information, I was unable to access testing earlier.

Although I was recognised as being at higher risk, all I was offered was yearly mammograms from the age of 40… too late.

At one appointment, a sonographer even recommended yearly MRI scans because of my risk, but this was refused.

I am now 38 and have since been diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer.

Only AFTER my diagnosis was genetic testing finally carried out, and my results have now confirmed that I carry the PALB2 gene mutation, an inherited gene linked to increased breast cancer risk.

There was a genuine inherited risk there all along - I just didn’t know.

I am now facing a bilateral mastectomy as part of reducing my future cancer risk.

No one should have to face cancer before being given the opportunity to understand their genetic risk.

Because of this, I launched a UK Parliament petition calling for fairer and earlier access to genetic testing, especially for those who may not have clear or complete family history.

The petition has now reached over 8000 signatures, the Pink Ribbon Foundation has supported the campaign by sharing it on social media, and the story was featured in the Daily Mail.

Please keep signing and sharing. Every single signature matters and helps us push this conversation further. :growing_heart:

Hey @ellieac123

I’m so sorry to hear about your mum, your own diagnosis and what your PALB2 results mean for you going forward.

Petition is signed!

Wishing you all the very best for your treatment. x

Hi @ellieac123
I follow you on Facebook, I am so sorry that they couldn’t give you the test you needed so that you could have had all the facts about your body, and hopefully avoided what you are going through now!

Also sending lots of best wishes, as I know you are in hospital with an awful allergic reaction, I hope you get home very soon!
