Hi this is regarding the Genetic testing, how many types to cancer are checked? Thankfully my results are negative.
Hi carmen81,
Thank you for posting your question.
The altered genes that raise the risk of developing breast cancer can also raise the risk of developing some other breast cancers, such as ovarian cancer. Genetic testing looks for the altered gene, rather than the type of cancer. Our booklet ‘Family history of breast cancer: managing your risk’ explains the different altered genes that are looked at in the breast cancer setting, including the other cancer types related to these genes.
Although your genetic test has come back negative, you can talk to your genetics team, or breast care treatment team or GP of you have further questions about your family history or risk of breast cancer.
Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK -prefix 18001).
