Geriatric Medicine (not even 50 yet)

I’m really confused and a bit nervous, I’ve been sent a telephone appointment through with the geriatric medicine team, there’s nothing to say what its about and none of my other consultants have mentioned it. The only test I’m waiting for the results for is the dexa scan, but I thought the oncologist would give me the results since she ordered the test. I’m only 49. Has anyone else been referred to this team for dexa scan results.

If there’s a number I should ring up and check that it’s not a mistake or ask your BCN about it . I received my DEXA scan results by post but I don’t know if that’s standard . Xx

Hi @minahmoo

I think osteoporosis and reading of Dexa scans is one of those areas that falls into different specialties, depending on which consultants have a special interest. So each NHS district may have a different specialty overseeing if they don’t have a dedicated specialist. They may want you to start some preventative treatment if you are on AI hormone blockers. That’s what happened to me, and yes I seem to remember it was a geriatric consultant who reported the scan. We just have to go with the flow and be glad someone is looking at important issues, I guess

All the best with your ongoing care
