Getting back to 'normal'

Getting back to ‘normal’

Getting back to ‘normal’ I’m new to this so bear with me! I recently finished my treatment on Easter Monday after 3 sessions of FEC and 3 sessions of Docetaxel and 4 weeks of rad. I didn’t find it as bad as I thought it was going to be but am still glad it is all over!

Now that it has been a few months since it has all finished I’m feeling a bit lost and unsure about what happens next! I’ve had a follow up appointment for a manual check but there are no scans or tests planned, is that normal? Does anyone else feel a bit lost after their treatment ended? How do they know the treatment did what they wanted it to?!

Also has anyone elses periods stopped as a result of treatment and then come back after a certain amount of time? I was told it was a possibility but was just concentrating on my treatment at the time, but I’m only 30 and hate the thought that they may not come back and therefore not be able to have kids. If that is the case though I would rather know for sure so can start dealing with it and making alternative plans.

Lots of questions I know! I have tried talking to my breast specialist nurse but find it hard to pin her down sometimes, especially now my treatment has finished.

Any words of advise would be appreciated!

Thanks
Nix

Hi Nix
I dont know whether it will be helpful for you but it may be an idea to post in the young womens forum as i am sure a few are in a similar position to yourself. ie wanting children.

I dont think your oncologist has given you enough information. Mine asked me if i had finished my family. As i was 44 with 3 gorwn up kids and a hubby who has had the snip i definately had.

Are you on any medication now like tamoxifen? was your cancer hormone positive?

I keep in touch with the 5 women who had breast cancer and surgery with me.
Two are only 36 37, they both had FEC and taxotere, i know one has had periods but not regular she is hormone negative though not on any medication.
The other girl was taking tamoxifen and i know they advice you not to get pregnant on that and you need to take it for some years.

I do know there are ladies out there who have had babies after treatment so they will be better able to help you and BCC i am sure have a leaflet on it or a phone in where you can chat to someone.

You poor love you are so young to get this ‘crap’ disease.

I do hope it works out for you.

Hi Ruth

Thanks for your reply, I think I will post on the younger women’s forum to see if anyone else is going through the same thing. I’m not on any medication now, I was triple negative so thats a plus.

I did get information at the beginning but I had to make the decision so quickly, if I did want to go down the route of freezing eggs it would have put my treatment back a possible 6 months.

Thanks again and take care

Nix
