Going from lop sided to flat

I had a left side mastectomy in April 2020. Following genetic testing, I am now due to have the right breast off as a risk reducing measure.

I do not want reconstruction but I want to keep a bit of shape, rather than being flat. I am also desperate to leave removable prostheses behind!

Can you buy bras with built in filling / prostheses? I had planned to just buy a small cup padded bra but I am told that this will not do the job without some form of prosthetic support.

Ideas welcome, many thanks.

Hi @rosietd

Firstly, I hope your op all goes well for you.

Ref prostheses - What specifically is/has your problem with them, that you say you want to leave them behind?? I doubt you’d be able to wash a bra with a “built in” prostheses, unless removable, yeh?

I’m a bi-lat mastectomy girl of 15yrs. Always worn bras with pockets for the prostheses and just leave them in until I wash my bra, then transfer them into all my other pocketed bras. So it’s like having built in ones, but removable. Do you not wear yours in “pocketed” bras and have had problems with them becoming displaced, falling out or something?

I got part way through a very delayed implant reconstruction, but didn’t finish, so my chest is now very uneven, and I no longer wear prostheses. But do wear “padded” bra’s without a problem. The padding’s quite thick, so doesn’t collapse easily unless it’s pushed in by something pressing against it from outside it, of course. But otherwise is fine under both loose or closer fitting jumpers, blouses, dresses. Two are from “Royce” who I bought most of my “pocketed” one’s from, and do a good range all at very reasonable prices. The other’s from Sainsbury’s ! I wear a 34 B cup.

But otherwise, I’d still happily be carrying on with pocketed bras and prostheses. Or have finished my implant surgery and not needed pockets or padding any more!

Hope this may be of some help to you. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Hiya Rosie. I had a left side mastectomy, no reconstruction seven weeks ago so just finding my way with prosthetics. I have my official nhs one which works well but i find it a bit heavy & bulky. I wouldn’t wear it for running, yoga or digging the allotment. However, this week I received two Knitted Knockers. They are fab. So, so comfy & a great shape. If I was in your position I would probably decide my new cup size, get two KKs & keep them in a bra as suggested by the other poster. I hope the op goes well xx
