Going to the gym/swimming

I have had mild lymphoedema in one arm although both are vulnerable because of surgery to lymph nodes under both arms. Could anyone give me some advice about what I can and can’t do at the gym - also should I wear sleeves for swimming?

Thanks

Pat

Hi Pat

Not sure about what you can do at the gym - you need to get absolutely tip-top expert advice from someone who knows about lymphoedema and exercise. I do know that you have to warm up and down more slowly and carefully and that weights are a particularly tricky area. My little lymphoedema book warns against really strenuous exercise (while at the same time advocating plenty of not too strenuous activity) because an impaired lymphatic system is unlikely to be able to keep up with the demands on it dor any length of time.

Swimming, however, is really, really good for lymphoedema, tho’ - with or without a sleeve. I never swim in mine - far too ugly! Again, you have to not overdo it at first, slowly and not for too long and gradually build up.

Hope this helps!
