Got my results today

Amazingly I feel quite calm about the news - don’t know if that’s good or bad considering! Anyway, it has been confirmed and it’s a type 3 which is faster growing and hormone based. The good news is that it is quite small and they think that it has not affected my lymph glands, but this needs to be checked when the cancer cells are removed etc. Because my twin has been through this over the last 20 years (twice) then I suppose I have been expecting it to get me sometime. Although they didn’t consider me to be a high risk about 7 years ago when certain guide lines changed. Well, that’s water under the bridge now and I/we have to move on and deal with everything as it comes. Booked in for surgery on 9th Jan with the next lot of results a week later to see what path the next step will take. Have a couple of friends who live locally who are bc recovering over the last 10 years, so they are very supportive. Nice bc doctor and nurse at the hospital today and gave me losts of literature and contact tel nos. if I need them. The hardest part is going to be telling my daughters, sisters and remaining family that needs to know and that’s when the calmness with probably evaporate. Going out to a Xmas do tonight and intending to enjoy myself. Tomorrows another day!

Beryl sorry to hear you have had your fears confirmed…

It’s good that it’s small though

With regards your risk even now I wouldnt say your family were at an increased risk… Not sure what age yiur twin was diagnosed at but if she is the only person in your family to be diagnosed and she was over 40 this would make you at in creased risk of getting BC but it’s unfortunate that you have developed it as well… It’s a very common disease and there are cases where it will crop up in more than one family members but the fact you are twenty years older than your sister was at diagnosis would indicate it was more a matter of unlucky chance… The biggest risk factors breast cancer is unfortunately being female and getting older… If it had been something that was likely to happen Eg a genetic link you would probably have developed it around the same age as her… So maybe try and look on the positives that you have been lucky enough to have an extra twenty years without it.

If you are worried about your family history you can ask to speak to the genetic team to help assess your familys risk… But it’s not uncommon for two sisters to get BC… Just unlucky :frowning:

Take care
