Gout

Has anyone had gout after chemo?I have arthritis which did not trouble me during chemo(there is one good side-effect!)My joint pain has come back, quite badly in on e knee.My GP has now done tests for gout which is apparently a well known side effect of chemo.
I am hoping it is since something can actually be done about it.This side effect seems to be a well kept secret unless you go onto gout websites.
Has anyone else had this problem?
(I dont smoke, drink alcohol or eat rich food)

I’ve never heard of it being a side effect from chemo, but when my late dad became very old he suffered with gout from time to time and would have to be hospitalised. If it’s bad it can sometimes mimic the same symptoms as cellulitis so it has to be checked out. He had to take an Allupurinol tablet in the morning to keep it at bay (it stops the salt crystals forming round your joints). I spoke to my dad’s GP a few years back and he said they didn’t really associate it so much with a lot of things like wine and rich food these days. I think in my dad’s case because he was very old his kidneys were not functioning as efficiently as he was also taking diuretic pills.

I too suffered really painful joint swelling to my left ankle during chemo, it has not got much better after even 12 months and my docs said they did not know what it could be but it showed up on my bone scan as arthritis… it was really weird as it came up within two days… wonder if it’s gout I have had tests for uric acid content and have been told it’s high and to drink more water but I’m drowning in the stuff.

Hi Just got back from GP as was convinced I had hurt my ankle coming awkwardly off a kerb 2 weeks ago and have since got a painful ankle, red swollen and keeps ‘giving way’. Had last chemo FEC in April 2010. Decided to google gout and picked up the forum link. This BC stuff never ends does it? Have to go back to have bloods done next week for def dx.Jackie
