Our response, from Jane Hatfield, Director of Policy and Research:
“This announcement is excellent news as we know that early detection of breast cancer can play a key role in improving treatment success.
“While there have been significant improvements in breast cancer survival rates over recent years we still lag behind other countries in our one year survival rates. Earlier detection, combined with better access to treatments, could bring the UK up to speed with our European counterparts.
“Our own research has shown there are groups of women, particularly the over 70s and those from socially deprived areas, who aren’t aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer so it’s vital that these projects are tailored to local communities and are delivered in a way that all women can benefit from them.”
