Grade 3 post op

Hi

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 weeks ago, after several biopsies they said it was a massive area (12cm by 6cm!) and grade 3 invasive hormone receptor negative. It was also in another area of her breast which I think they said was DCIS. Her lymph node biopsy came back clear. Due to the size of the cancer they could not offer a lumpectomy and she had a single mastectomy last week and they did a sentinel node biopsy at the same time. She’s recovering well.

We have the results call tomorrow and I am wondering what results we will find out other than the sentinel node result? They haven’t done an MRI or CT etc so can they say what stage it is? Will she have further tests to see if it has spread?
I’m also questioning whether it means it’s locally advanced if she has 2 types of breast cancer in 1 breast?
I know I should ask the doctor and nurses these questions but I only get the opportunity to ask in front of mum and I don’t want to add to her worry by asking questions which she hasn’t considered. I feel like the more I know, the more prepared I can be to look after her and manage her expectations. She had bowel cancer 4 years ago and didn’t need chemo or follow up treatment after surgery so I feel like it’s giving her hope that this could be the same but from the size and grade of the cancer I don’t think it’s the case.

many thanks for taking time to read my long post!

Hi worrieddaughter16,

Thank you for your post.

I am sorry you haven’t had any response yet. I am hoping my response will help our members to see your post and share their experience.

In the meantime, please remember that for any clinical question our breast care nurses are here and happy to talk thing through.

Sending you our best wishes,

Zoe

Hi My breast cancer was Grade 3 invasive cancer with high grade DCIS and LCIS so had a mastectomy. No nodes involved. This was in 2014 and no other treatment except Tamoxifen for 10 years, which I find ok to take.  Its good you are looking after your Mum and doing the research that will be a great help as I didn’t always take in all whatwas said to me.  I seemed to only remember the negative things.

@worrieddaughter16  - it’s really thoughtful of you to reach out on this forum to try to find answers for your Mum and for you, and really sensitive of you to try to find answers without asking in front of your Mum. I’m sorry I have only just seen your post so I assume by now your Mum has had her results? I wonder if any of your queries have been answered by her team? If not, you might like to call the lovely nurses on here, the number is at the top right of the page - 08088006000. As they are medically trained they are better able to explain and discuss your queries. @Geranium  has given you a positive story to focus on too.

I’m really glad to hear that your Mum is recovering well from her surgery, but very sorry this is the second incidence of cancer she has had to deal with. She is very lucky to have you to look after her. It’s tough being the one to look after someone with cancer so do make sure you also have some support - again you can chat to any of us on here, or the nurses at any time. Sending you and your Mum hugs and strength, Evie xx
