(Gross)Cystic Disease

Hi all, I’ve searched the site and can only find one post in 2009 on this so looking for advice and experience of others. I was re-referred to breast clinic 5 months after multiple cysts drained with more lumps and pain. The Dr said last time I was diagnosed with the above (news to me) and ultrasounds showed it was more of the same, particularly the upper parts of the breasts. Last time they were biopsied and removed. This time they are leaving them in because removing hasn’t helped and more have formed in the 5 months. Dr just said my cells are dividing, multiplying and manifesting as these cysts instead of anything cancerous but in effect mimicking the process? I don’t have any risk factors and its just one of those things. I’m trying to get used to the constant sharp pains and the dull ache. When I asked Dr how then do I know if lumps need checking etc, or could they be marking something deeper, i’ve to report anything changing. No formal follow up. This worries me as there are so many lumps how can I know so it feels I’ve either to be a hypochondriac or wait til its too late. I also googled when I came home (seriously wish I hadn’t and know it was a stupid thing to do) and lots of articles seem to say that this diagnosis means x4 more likely for the mutations to turn cancerous at some unknown point. This means if I had a one in eight chance before (national average?) this means now a 1 in 2 chance??? This has really worried me. Feel like a bit of a ticking time clock. Not sure if I’m right on any of the above and/or worrying for nothing so any shared experiences welcome.

Hi LSM72

It sounds like you’re having a difficult time at the moment.  Whilst you are waiting for the other users to reply with their experiences you might find it helpful to contact the helpline and talk things through.  Here you can share your thoughts and questions with a member of staff who will offer you a listening ear as well as emotional support and practical information.  The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and lines are open weekdays 9 to 5pm and Saturday 10 to 2pm.

Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator
