Hi everyone! You all sound a lovely supportive group of people, so I just need someone to talk to.
I’m twenty one and nearly two months ago, I found a lump in my right breast. It’s really hard, and I went to my GP a couple of weeks ago, and he said there definately was a lump there, about the size of a pea.
He told me to come back in six weeks time (11th June is my appointment), and I know I’m being a bit silly because my risk is SO low. I’m young, no history of any cancers in my family, not even in my grandparents. But I can’t help it when it’s still there. I know it’s probably just a cyst or something, but I just feel like people should take me more seriously and not laugh off the lump. It’s completely different when you have one, and it is a real worry, but nobody understands it.
My best wishes to anyone who has gone through cancer of any kind or still has it, really hope things work out for you.
Hi,
If I were you I would go see a different doctor in your surgery. It maybe nothing and fingers crossed it is, but you have the right to be referred to a specialist. I found my lump when I was 28 and thankfully my docs are fab and referred me straight away. Your doc is not a Breast specialist (I assume). Like you I had no family history etc and very low chance of me getting me but I did. It is obviously playing on your mind or you wouldn’t have stumbled across us lot on here. Please call your docs in the morning, mine gave me an emergancy appt when I said what the problem was, despite me trying to put it off (I was being a wuss).
Please let us know how you get on, I’m sure it’ll be a cyst or fibrodema or something but you must get checked properly and the sooner it’s done, the sooner it gets sorted. You’re in a terribly low risk category.
Take Care

Hi,
It is such a worry isn’t it? But it is really rare for someone your age to get BC.BUT you must still get it checked out.
I had a lump age 20 which was diagnosed as a fibroadenoma.A harmless lump that is quite common in young women.I never had it removed and it never bothered me.I have since had BC but its in a different place and not connected at all.
Good luck,
Dot

Hi lisplover
Just wanted to echo what the others have said and get straight back onto the phone tomorrow to GP surgery. Is there a female doctor in the practice you could speak too? I know it is difficult but stand up for yourself and demand an appointment with a specialist to get this properly checked, as em says your GP is not qualified to make this assessment.
It is probably absolutely nothing but six weeks is far too long for you to worry and wait.
All the best Anne x
Hi Lisplover,
I was always under the impression that anyone presenting with a breast lump should be referred and seen within 2weeks at their local breast clinic or hospital clinic.
My daughter was 18yrs when she had a lump and they seen about it within the 2wks and i had bc dx at aged 30 and was referred straight away, so if i were you even though there is no history in your family and it probably is a cyst i would get another appointment and with another doc in your practice and demand a referral to put your mind at rest. How does anyone know what the lump is until they investigate.
Although i had bc at a young age my daughters lump turned out to be harmless and it sure gave her a lot of relief.
Is there anyone who could go to docs with you for some backup.
Good Luck

i guess they were waiting to see if its a cyclical lump and if it changes throughout your menstrual cycle… you shoudlnt need to wait 6 weeks though… if it hasnt changed in the past 3 weeks then that would indicate that its not cyclical so why not arrange for a doc appt for next week.
even if your low risk due to your age this doesnt stop you worrying about it and you really just need to find out what it is.
your GP should be able to refer you to a one stop shop within two weeks… im pretty sure the gp should have referred you when you first presented but id say go and see him sooner or ask to see a diff GP.

Thanks for the advice so far!
Well I discovered it the start of April, and had a period mid April, and I checked it and it was still there. Going through May’s period at the moment, so I guess the doc wants to check if it is still there through another cycle.
But yeah it is a worry even though I know I am low risk!
