Hair after chemo?

Has anyone tried the physcience sublime tablets from boots to help with hair growh, my friend gave me some, have one more chemo to go but it has starting growing and would like to give it a helping hand.

Hi lilythepink,

Before taking anything that isn’t prescribed by your medical team, it is adviseable just check with your medial team to make sure what you are wanting to take won’t give any adverse reaction to your prescribed medication.

Hi guys
How’s the hair going?
Lily, i haven’t heard of the tablets, but to be honest with you, i would take just about anything to kickstart mny hair into action! I have some fluffy stuff, but nothing to speak of as of yet (although last chemo was 12 days ago!)
Good luck with the last chemo, you are going to be so relieved i am sure…

RECs have not heard of the revitalash. I have no lashes either, but my eyes aren’t too bad (now my nose is another matter!).

Come on hair GROW!

Naz and all - getting very frustrated indeed (almost panic but keeping a lid on it - just) I am nearly 5 weeks post chemo and 10 weeks after my last taxotere and I still have no sign of any hair growing where it wasn’t. the stuff that stayed is growing - it’s in terrible condition but it is growing - where it is not is STILL just shiny and bald - arms, eyebrows/lashes/head the lot bald as a baby’s proverbial.

I was in the hospital last week and asked the nurse about it and she said - oh leave it another 2 weeks and floated off before I could say "and then what "???

I am starting to feel much better in myself and am out in this glorious sunshine walking, cycling and even hit a golf ball yesterday (not very well but did it. Wonder if the Tamoxifen is slowing the hair return ? I have been taking it for nearly 3 weeks - no side effects at all but just wonder. Also does anyone know the impact of herceptin on hair growth ? I have to see the onc on 3/5 to discuss starting herceptin 4/5 is good for me !

any thoughts ? enjoy the beautiful weather and get fit - luv xxxx

RECS - hi there

Just wanting to say IMHO 5 weeks isn’t that long for hair not to have returned. I finished TAX at the end of Jan '10 and for the first 4 weeks continued to lose hair everywhere until everything (lashes/brows and even the hair on my forearms) had gone. I was so bl***y green with envy to read on here that some ladies have hair regrowth before treatment ends I could’ve screamed ! I guess we are all different?
I’m now 11 weeks since the last TAX and it’s only been in the last 2 weeks that it’s started to grow back (grey damn it!!) but it’s there at last. I’d read on some medical bumpf that it’s normal to take up to 12 weeks post chemo for hair to return - so that was my worry point, if still bald then it would be okay to panic
I believe that the chemo stays in our bodies for many months, so it’s possible that the side effects would remain as well ?
I’m on Herceptin and it’s only on this site that I’d read that it may slow down hair regrowth - but again it may hapen to some but not all.
This weather is indeed beautiful  so glad that you are enjoying it.
Take care
S

Hi everyone

I’m also looking eagerly for hair to reappear. Had last chemo 18/3, some hair left but extremely sparse.

All the best

Chris

the little that remains has taken to falling out now ! we’re going in the wrong direction :frowning: damn and blast…

Hiya

Like Sabby, I continued to lose hair long after chemo ended in early Dec. I had already lost all head hair but eyelashes and brows hung on till after chemo finished. It’s now 4 months since last chemo and my head hair is about 1/2 inch long, mostly grey and thick. I put Daniel Field Liquid serum (contains almond oil) on it to combat dryness and make it shiny. I did try a Daniel Field herbal colour but it didn’t really make much difference to the colour.

Now that I have some (not a lot!) hair, I have put the wig back in it’s box and am braving the world bareheaded. Bit cold sometimes but I’m flattered when people say I look like Sinead O’Connor!! I wish I could sing like her!

Eyelashes and brows are growing back slowly and what a pain having to shave my legs again after months of lovely smooth ones! At least I only have to shave one armpit as rads permanently rid my left armpit of hair!

Just be patient, the hair will return in it’s own good time!

Deffo still losing hair - the hair that ā€œstayedā€ was growing and now is falling out - OMG I hope hope hope that it will return. I’m 5 weeks post ANY chemo and 10 weeks post TAX and now it bloody falls out ! I am desperate for it to return and for me to ā€œfeel/look normalā€ but … has anyone else had this delayed effect ? my nails were fine until 2 weeks ago and now they are all falling off - cut real short to ensure that I don’t catch them but the nail bed has lifted almost altogether just in these past 2 weeks. Odd

I am chuffed because today I whipped my wig off after work as usual and my OH said ā€œYou have more hair every day - and today it looks like it needs a comb through it!ā€

I gave my head a clean shave before my first of four taxoteres, so that was 12 weeks ago. I now have 2-3cms of fluff mostly all over, but it isn’t normal coverage - I think what has grown is what never fell out. The stuff that did fall out hasn’t really started growing again yet, so I have a couple of bald patches right at the front.

I really want my eyebrows back - they were so thick before and I think my face looks blank without them. I can’t use eye make up to create definition as my eyes water too much!

Getting seriously fed up of the wig now, and hats are so hot. How do people cope when they have to wear a wig all summer long!!!

I finished chemo in July last year, and my hair began returning fairly soon after that, but it has taken age to grow just 3 inches. A couple of weeks ago I found a company called HAIR IN RECOVERY that supply Racoon hair extensions to people recovering from chemotherapy, and I have now had real hair extensions added to my hair, and as of yesterday stopped wearing my wig. The hair is fantastic, the company is sponsored by Macmillan, and I paid a very reduced rate for them. I would recommend anyone with a couple of inches growth to look them up on the internet.

I am with you Flora, except i only finised the last tax two weeks ago.
I desperately want my brows and lashes back as once the make up is off i don’t know who i am …weird.
Also fed up of the wig too, it’s hot and beginning to irritate the pants off me at present, especially as the fringe blows vertically when it’s windy and stays there until i smooth it down.
Don’t get me wrong, i am glad i had the treatment, BUT god do i want to look normal again, sooner rather than later!

jaclyn, glad you found the extensions, that does seem a long time for your hair to grow back doesn’t it…if mine does the same i will be looking out for them too i think.

I had 4 EC which started in Sept - and lost may hair three weeks on which is quite normal. My hair appeared to grow again in Nov, when I moved on to Taxotere/Docetaxol a few months later, but it was a false promise with few wispy bits.

I finished Tax on 7/1 and only now are my fingernails starting to drop off … but my hair is starting to grow. My head hair is a very short crew cut - lots of kiwi fluffy bits - but a marked improvement. No intentional hat-less outings yet … but didn’t get too embarassed when my hat blew off the other day!!

I have been to the local shop WITHOUT MY WIG !!

I was able to bare my head for the first time in Oct 2008, a very short silver crew cut style that emerged after nearly a year of being bald. I go to the local theatre to see a lot of films and the staff looked quite shocked as they had got used to me in different coloured bandanas. In fact, the following month I went to a wedding reception and someone asked if the silver job was my wig lol! It took until the January for it to be long enough to get it styled.

I’ve loved being silver, but I’m bored now so I’m going a sort of pearl coloured ash blonde at the end of the month as it’s my OHs 50th in a few weeks. In the past year I’ve made appointments for colouring and cancelled them at the eleventh hour, but it was because I had put up with a year of women saying to me ā€œoh, you are dyeing that aren’t youā€, including my sister!

This time I’ve booked the appointment for the right reasons, because I want to have it done, NOT because someone else thinks I should. Ideally I’d love to be silver in winter and a warmer shade in summer, my hairdresser says it could be achievable as I keep my hair short.

Whoops - I should have said I had my hair back in Oct 2007! I get really mixed up with all the dates these days.

STILL no sign - starting to fret about it and I know that I shouldn’t and that that will not help at all but - it is now nearly 12 weeks since the last Taxotere and 6 weeks since I had any chemo at all - that loud noise you here is me tapping my fingers !!!

I had epi/cmf chemo and my hair started to return after chemo no 3 of the epi and continued to grow during the rest of my chemo, it grew in very nice, but I am now on tamoxifen and feel it has thinned a bit. My friend had taxotere chemo and her hair took longer to grow back, its lovely now tho. Her eyebrows never grew back. Everybody is different.

Take care all

hi Recs

It is now 5 weeks since my last chemo. I cannot see any hair yet either, but my scalp is feeling ā€˜fuzzy’ in places and is itchy.

Some hair is still coming out, and seem to have lost my brows/lashes in the last few weeks.

Good luck

Chris

Hi Recs & Chris

Not to worry. I’ve only had my wig off for 1 week & it’s 19 weeks now since my last chemo. Any day now I’m sure you’ll start to see something. You mentioned a ā€˜fuzzy’ scalp Chris, & I felt mine was fuzzy when I ran my hand over it. When the first hair came it was very fair (or maybe white) & wispy, soon got quite long but stood on end & was like a halo, you could still see the scalp quite clearly underneath - however it quickly thickened up & went dark grey, except for a white patch at the front. A couple of weeks later my hairdresser coloured it with some Naturtint, & it looks so much better all the same colour.
Good luck-it won’t be long.
