Hair after chemo?

Still waiting for hair here too !
It has been three weeks since last chemo and i am desperate!
I hate not having hair brows and lashes…grrrrhhhhhhhhhh!

Hang on in there Naz.

Hey Naz - I may be wrong but I think my scalp has turned a blue/grey colour and I am wondering if that is like a 5 o’clock shadow and that hair is about to burst through ! I will keep you posted cause that would be very exciting.

I start Rads on Tuesday so here we go again ! Luv Rhonz xx

Hi Naz,
I finished my chemo in dec 09 and have now got a full covering of fairly thick hair, unfortunatly my grey patch right at the front has come back! the rest is similar to before. I have had a trim to even up my hair growth and now have a “pixie” type style. Before chemo I had long stright hair and it now seems a bit wavey. I worked through most of my chemo when i felt well enough initially wearing bandanas but then in about oct I stopped wearing then as I felt better without but Iave to say i am glad it is growing back. Having had long hair for most of my adult life I am quite enjoying having short hair and i dont think I will grow it again. There are a couple of videos on utube that show hair growth by time lag which I found useful when i only had “bum fluff” hair!

Happy growing

Jano

Hey Recs
Wow, hair may be on its way then! I really hope so as i feel the same as you!
It has to come back, and it will…just give it a bit longer…

All the best with rads next week, thankfully i have escaped that and am waiting to see the breast surgeon to see what he can do with my totally mishapen chest! I do have £200 of prothesis stuffed into my bra at this very moment, and am keen to get under the knife and have it sorted asap!

Jano, i have a ‘fuzz’ of some description on my head, and that is about it at the mo. I am desperate for some hair as i am going on my ‘recouperation’ holiday to Lisbon in six weeks and do not want to wear a wig or anything on my head…

Long may the hair grow!

Naz x

Thought I would report back that my OH has just given me a haircut! My 13 weeks growth (I’m 4 weeks post-chemo) of thin fuzz was looking scruffy, so he’s given me a grade 3 to even it up until the rest starts coming through.

He said that just because fuzz was all I had, it was no excuse not to keep it tidy!!!
To be fair, he has to look at it more than I do!!!

Sending hair growing vibes to everyone waiting…

Flora - took your good advice - I had hair that never left me ! odd but true and it was growing so OH took a number 3 to it and it looks much much better- if the bald bits will now grow I would even go out without my hat if it was warm cause it looks ok - looks like I’ve had a number 3 buzz cut but ok ! LOL !!

thanks for this - hope you are recovering well. I’m just off to my first radiation session so (gulp) fingers crossed it is nothing like chemo !

Hi Recs and all waiting for hair

Good luck today.

I’m into my second week of rads - no 7 today, so far so good, just starting to feel slightly tender. Drink plenty of water and slap on the cream!

My head feeling very itchy - lady at rads last week said her head was itchy when her hair started to regrow - must be a good sign.

lol Chris

Hi RECS
Hope Rads was OK today - mine start a week from today!

The no 3 cut does feel tidier, doesn’t it?! It won’t be long now…

Chris, lets hope the itchy head bodes for some sprouting soon!!!

There is definitely some hair happening - not much but definitely something there - I’ll keep you posted. I have no idea what colour it will be cause I haven’t seen my own hair (ie without chemicals) for 30 years !!

RECS I am so pleased for you. Keep us posted xx

Nice one RECS, wahoo…the hair is coming …so pleased! How was rads? x

Rads are nippy sore Naz ! not enjoying it - it lasts for seconds but I am strangely anxious during it - like jump up off the couch if I could anxious ! anyway 4 down and 15 to go !

Start Herceptin on Monday also ! so bit anxious about that too so I guess a glass of wine this evening might be required to calm me down a bit. I had 6 weeks there of no treatment at all - such bliss think I got a little too used to being treatment free and now it is freeking me out but still it is nowhere near as bad as chemo.

How are you ? OK ? any sign of your hair starting ? itchy scalp ? Enjoy the bank holiday weekend xx

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Hair definately on its way - very light and patchy - but hair!

My head is still feeling very itchy - will be glad to have a proper covering of hair, getting fed up of feeling like a homeless tortoise!

I signed up for the Race for life yesterday - I am doing the 10k at Bournemouth on the 20th June

Having a nice relaxing day today (I hope), 5 more rads to go, not felt too bad so far, but have been getting tired more easily. Must get a walk in before it rains again.

lol Chris

I finished chemo on 12th March and as you can see from the photo my hair is just starting to grow back. But it’s so grey. How long before I can colour it? I know I can use vegetable dye but I want a bit of blonde back

Hi Recs and everyone else!

Hope RADS is not too bad for you, and that it goes quickly !
What is the Herceptin for? How is that given?
I am due to start tamoxifin soon, hope there are no se’s, as i am enjoying being drug free at the mo…
How is the hair doing? Do you wear a wig? I have just bought a new one as my old one was getting very worn. i hope it will be the last wig as i hate the damm things…
My hair, well it is a fuzz, that is all i can say. I miss my lashes and brows more to be honest, and there is no sign of any growth there at all…
Oh well, it has to happen sometime, so will wait a bit longer…

Take care and keep us posted on the hair developments…
Happy hair growing to everyone else!

Hi Naz
Herceptin is an infusion given if your cancer is receptive to the HER2 protein. I am on this, and on Tamoxifen. Herceptin doesn’t have any side effects, but the first 2-3 doses are given slowly, under observation in case you do have an allergic reaction to it. It’s given, like chemo, every 3 weeks, but the course is long… 18 treatments that take a year to get through! I’ve had 4 so far…

Tamoxifen does have side effects, which are basically like menopause symptoms. I already had those from being on Zoladex (to suppress my ovaries and try and protect them from the chemo), and so far the Tamoxifen just seems to make my hot flushes hotter!!

I started my rads today, and like Recs, had just been getting used to being treatment free! Still, I am sure the next 3 weeks will go quickly.

I’ve definitely noticed my eyebrows are starting to grow again. I didn’t lose them entirely, but they have thinned a lot, and now I can see new growth coming through. Not sure my head hair is coming back yet though, but it is hard to tell as I was never entirely bald except for when we gave it a clean shave!

Hope you are keeping well.
xx

Thanks for the info Flora, I was curious as i had heard of herceptin, but wasn’t sure what it was about.

Glad your brows are growing again, mine look as though the moths have been at them!

I hope the rest of your treatment goes okay for you…I start tamoxifin soon (must find out when exactly).

Job hunting at the mo. proving to be a challenge as i have decided that teaching is not for me any longer…so back to the drawing board as they say…

Bye for now…

Hi Girls - just checking in - started Herceptin on Monday and so far so good no side effects, Monday was a very l o n g day cause I had rads in the morning then straight to the other hospital (other side of the city) for the first Herceptin which went fine but I was there all bleedin day ! first bloods then the infusion then just sitting around waiting ! anyway that is my moan out the way - good news is that I had no reaction to the Herceptin so we are off !

My eyelashes are starting to grow they are not yet anything like visible but with the help of Bobbi Brown liquid eye gel few if anyone ever notices that I don’t have lashes unless I say so that is good. My brows are still not gro in general folk don’t really "look " at you not closely so you can get away with a good paint job ! I went for a makeup lesson at Bobbi Brown counter today and a nice job they made of me - highly recommended and free you are not under obligation to buy anything - of course I did but…

there is some light hair under my arms and my head is still fuzzy so I will keep you posted on how that comes along.

Naz good luck with the job hunting and with the hair ! Flora good to have company on my herceptin journey although I wish to God neither you nor I had to do it ! ho hum

Hi

Hows the hair growing everyone?

I am feeling quite pleased with mine - it is getting darker now, still only a few mm long and very thin - but I am enjoying it being there, and feeling very proud of it.

I showed my friend my ‘hair’ yesterday - she was so encouraging that it looks good I’m looking forward to some warmer weather when I can go out without a hat!

I had my last rad yesterday. Still not sore, but very tired. Not sure how much is the Tamoxifen which I started 2 weeks ago, or rads.

lol - Chris
