Hair shape under wig

I am due to start chemo in a couple of weeks. I have got my wig and am intending using the cool cap, if I can manage it. I am going to get my hair cut tomorrow morning and was wondering if anyone had any advice as to styles for really thick hair under wig. I have been told by my BCN that, even if I can tolerate the cold cap, that my hair will thin. But it is in a bob style just now and is very thick for under a wig.

Hi Kelly,

I’m using the cold cap and have had 4 x AC and 1 x Tax and am very happy with the results (so far, touch wood etc - but still have 3 sessions to go. It’s thinned alot, but I could still get away with wearing it down if it wasn’t for my grey roots!). I cut my long, thick, curly tresses into a shoulder length bob and dyed it to my natural hair colour as you shouldn’t dye it during treatment. I haven’t worn my wig yet as I was worried about it pulling my hair out that I have been trying to preserve! I’ve been wearing head bands and thin scarves (with hair poking out of bottom) to cover my grey hairs.

When I was trying on the wigs prior to treatment starting it was really difficult with thick hair, but maybe as it thins it will be easier? My advice would probably be to go for the cold cap. If it works for you, then I assume you’ll want to keep some length anyway, in which case you wont need your wig unless it thins to a point where you feel that it is obvious, when it will be easier to wear the wig anyway. Or you can always get your hair cut shorter at that point (no need to panic now - you’ll be able to get out and about to the hairdressers, or maybe arrange for a mobile hairdresser to come to you if you did get to the point that you were feeling a bit self-concious).

Pop a couple of parecetamol before the cold cap - and make sure you have a nice hot drink when it’s being put on.

Good luck - hope it goes well.

Personally i’m not understanding why you would want to wear a wig over a full head of hair, especially at this time of year. It’s hard enough trying to wear a hat, and that itches when sweaty, but add that to hormone changes and flushes, and it’s not going to be comfy at all.
Make the most of your hair, you might not loose it with cold cap anyway.

hi, my advice would be not to wear the wig unless you really, really have to, certainly not whilst you still have your own hair,

I have lost my hair completely twice now, and each time I have worn the wig when my hair has been coming back and quite frankly I think it does more harm than good, a bit like wearing a woolly hat,

so, leave off the wig, maybe have your own hair trimmed before you start chemo, and see what happens as you go through the regime,

keep us posted, and good luck thinking of you Liz x

my hair was down to my bum before chemo…had it cut to a bob to see if it would last longer. Was told, that I would lose the lot anyway, so didnt bother with the cold cap option (hate cold heads anyway). Lost the lot within 2 weeks (broke the hoover twice) and as it was coming out it just irritated the hell out of me, so just shaved the lot, no more itchiness, bonus.
Had my wigs, wore them on the school runs and if going out, more so for other people than for me. My kids loved chosing mummys hair for the day. Mostly wore a baseball cap cos it was comfy, but most of the time didnt bother with anything. Just got used to not bothering with wigs, and my lot got used to it as well. It was weird when it was coming back, all fuzzy…then one day on walking back from the school run, felt the wind fuzzle it, first time in months, was a very strange feeling (and made me cry) as it hadnt been there for months

hi,

I have a fuzzy covering at the moment, but I dont feel I have the courage just yet to go wig free, maybe another few weeks, my hair seems thin it was really thick before, and it has come back very soft not like hair at all really,

hope it thickens up a bit dont feel like doing a comb over just yet awhile lol, no I shouldnt joke about it really should I, but I am at that point now that if I dont laugh I am sure I will cry…

heres to a thicker covering, and hopefully lots of it

best wishes Liz xxx
