@chopwell this is exactly my experience too. I found i have so far only lost very little underarm hair, nothing from my legs, nothing from eyebrows and lashes but nearly all public hair! I think it partly depends on the different growth cycles of each area of hair!
I’m wearing mine regularly for work mostly. I find it easier to have hair than not when I’m in work situations - not protecting others’ feelings but rather to just not bring cancer into the room with me. I wear it on video calls sometimes if I feel like it, or I wear a hat or headscarf. I find it uncomfortable for more than half a day with glasses on, with contact lenses I can manage a full day. I spent a fair bit of time faffing about with it about a month ago to really make it feel more me - before that it felt too ‘well presented’ haha. Roughed it up a bit and moved the parting about and got used to fitting it. I think much less about it now once it’s on. I think it helps that it is quite a nice wig from a proper wig shop - Scottish NHS provides them on prescription.
I’m the same - didn’t wear it for ages but the shedding was getting me down so buzz cut a couple of weeks ago. Still have a fairly good coverage but patches around the crown. I wear my wig for work calls and when I’m out and about - if I’m just in the garden or walking the dog sometimes just opt for a cap.
I hadn’t considered the whole glasses thing so glad to hear someone else mention it. Much more comfortable with contacts, and don’t get my started on if I’m trying to hear wig, hat and over the ear headphones - way too much going on in the ear area!
I’m getting much more used to wearing it and it’s a lovely wig that NHS Scotland paid for which I feel very appreciative of - it’s totally different to my actual hair so am embracing the opportunity to have the straight hair I always wanted as a teen!
I know what you mean here @felineoptimist. It’s not about what others think - it’s about how you feel in yourself and I definitely get not wanting to bring cancer into the room.
My worst time in terms of how I feel about my appearance is if I catch a glimpse of myself in the morning when I’m in my dressing gown with no head covering because I just scream “cancer”. This was worse a few days ago though and I now tend to just do a comedy shudder.
In terms of being around others in an everyday setting - I tend to not really care at my appointments - I went out for lunch in just a beanie yesterday and I joked to my mum that I felt like I was playing a character with cancer in a film.
So although I was resistant to it at first, I think I’m about ready to look into wigs.
If you can go to a proper wig shop I think it really helps. I was recommended one by my BCN and they were amazing (Aderans in Edinburgh). Really caring and gave me loads of options - I went in thinking I would spend the whole time crying but actually enjoyed it. I went on my own as didn’t want to worry what someone else thought, and the lady said that lots of people bring their partners who are then really awkward and say yes to everything as are scared to say something wrong! I sent lots of photos to my sister to help with decision making once I had narrowed it down. I did it before I even started chemo so had it as a safety blanket and really glad I did.
Thank you all so much - that’s made a difference to my thinking. I have a good, expensive one lined up, and feel the same about shouting ‘Cancer, here!’ I dontcwear glasses all the time but was going to in the Summer when my eye hair goes., do, however, wear hearing aids. Hmmm. Hadnt thought of that…
Great advice @rubytuesday! Just found one in my area that specialises in dealing with hair loss, accepts the NHS voucher and does a free consultation so not losing anything by booking one in. ![]()
Things are getting freaky! Full on widow’s peak with most hair loss obvious at the front and top with still good coverage at the crown and at the back.
Armpit hair loss is interesting. I shaved it one day and I’ve not seen it since. ![]()
How’s everyone else getting on? x
Yeah my armpit hair has never returned and I finished chemo in Feb. I think my eyelashes are coming back though. They seem a bit thicker.
That is good news. Did you lose your brows completely and how are they doing now?
@mssteel no I was lucky not to lose them completely, they just receded from the outside edge to the top of the arch, but I have enough strands to work a bit of Wonderbrow through and they don’t look too bad. I’m unsure if they will fully come back, but at least if they don’t I have the option to micro blade them.
Wow, that’s amazing. You look fab!
Guess it’s a bit of a lottery like a lot of other things that go with this process.
I think you’re right. I have always had strong hair follicles and my lashes have always been naturally thick and long. Maybe this helped. It is less great on the upper lip though
I was also taking testosterone for a couple of years before this kicked off. My hair went thicker and stronger, so whether or not this contributed I will probably never know.
I also only did 2 x EC and 3 x Docetaxel due to a suspected non-response, so again this could have ben a factor. x
Hello Twink1, contact macmillian they can do referral vouchers for wigs, also I saw last night there are tax reduction forms from shops. I was talking to a macmillian nurse at my treatment yesterday and she advised some pateints have brought from Shien ,Amazon, and the quality of them was good. My hair started to shred day 18 , using my wired comb more coming out, I did have a moment took deepbreath, Im on cold cap, I have seend some amazing ladies who have used the cold cap and their hair is really good, they have shown me the hair regrowth so the cold cap is working. Im thinking of going to get my hair trimmed alittle shorter length. I have brought from Amazon some hats . Big Hugs xxx
Hi,
I’m on 3 rounds of EC followed by 3 rounds of Docetaxal. I’m cold capping, and started to shed hair day 18 after my first round, but not in clumps. Had my second round yesterday, my nurse wasn’t especially careful, so loads of hair was coming out as she combed through the conditioner. I’m asking, does the loss stop or just keep going?
I’ve not cut my hair, bought a few hats for when I get patches.
Thanks
