Haircut before chemo

Hi all,

I’m after a bit of advice. I had an auxiliary node clearance done on Friday and my next step is chemo. I don’t meet my oncologist until 10th August so I don’t know my plan but I’m trying to be as prepared as possible. 

Is it worth having a pixie cut before I start? I’ve had one before so I don’t find the thought of it too daunting. My hair is incredibly thick and I’m hoping to cold cap. Does having shorter hair help hide the hair loss at all?

I’ve got a micro blading appointment on Saturday. Is there anything I could do to prepare myself?

Hi mac33 a couple of the ladies who did chemo from Oct17 chemo thread that I was on did cold cap, they did go Bob length and both had curly hair, they both did well with cold cap, it did go a bit like manky cat fur on top a bit (their words not mine) but on whole they kept hair well, I think trick was all in tge carefulness of not washing too often I think it was. They took blanket and jumpers too because cold cap made them cold. I’m sure others will pop on with tips and tricks for cold cap. You don’t say how long your hair is? If you do decide for Bob and your hairs long enough maybe consider little princes trust where hair goes towards making a wig for a child. ??:sparkles::sparkles:Shi xx

I went a little bit further than a pixie cut, opting for a no 6 buzzcut. I did it the week before I started chemo. I didn’t cold cap but I was able, more or less, to maintain my hair throughout EC and paclitaxel, with minimum touch. I suspect it was that lack of brushing, massaging etc that preserved the hair.  By the end, I had maybe half my hair surviving so, with cold capping, you should be ok. Just smooth shampoo on with your palms, let the shower do the rest, pat dry with a towel and leave it alone. When it grows back, it will feel wonderful. 

What ‘broke’ me was losing my eyelashes lol! But it all grows back. It’s for a good cause.

Thank you both for your replies. I’ve decided to go for a pixie cut just to take a bit of control. I already have a long bob.

I’ll look into the Princess trust to see if I have enough hair to give them!
