I’m not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question but I will anyway!
I went for a bone density scan as a baseline assessment because I am taking Arimidex. I didn’t expect a problem and was stunned to learn that I am osteopenic, well on my way to having osteoporosis. I am seeing my GP this afternoon but understand that my oncologist has recommended that I should take calcium, vitamin D and bisphosphonates.
Apart from the fact that I already take so much medication that I shall rattle, I am really worried that it will mean more likelihood of broken bones and pain. I am already so sore from Arimidex induced pain in my knees, hips and spine. Also will this make getting holiday insurance any more difficult?
A year ago, I thought I was a perfectly fit woman, now I feel 50 years older than I really am!
My bone density scan revealed that I have osteopenia too…and I know of a few others on this and other forums. I have been on Arimidex for a year and take calcium/vitamin D. I was also told that this condition can be improved with load-bearing exercise (walking for me) and to avoid “bone stealers” such as diet coke. The National Osteoporosis website has some useful info
Hi, I was diagnosed osteopenic in 2004. I was put on Alendronic Acid ( Bisphosphonate) 1 a week and 2 calcichew + vit D daily. I had another density scan last week and although I am still osteopenic my results are significantly better so I am proof that the treatment works.
I don’t know about insurance , I wouldn’t have thought it would make any difference.
Good luck with treatment, I have no side effects at all from it.
Love Linda
My bone density scan showed the same for me, but I wasn’t particularly surprised as both my mother and sister have the same problem, and we are all of a small build and weight…I am 5’3 and a bit and weigh in at 7st 5lbs…so walking is not a weight bearing exercise for me!
I have been told I will have bisphosphonates and already take calcium + Vit D daily with the Arimidex.
I know the feeling…I was healthy before all this palaver started too!!!
Thank you all for your replies. I have been to my GP and have the prescriptions for the once weekly bisphosphonate (Alendronic acid) and the calcium and vitamin D (Adcal - D). It is good to know that your results have improved pinklinda. I am going to make an appointment at my gym to discuss load bearing exercise (in my case walking is definitely load bearing as I am overweight but going to weightwatchers and have lost 10.5 lbs so far!)
My bone density results aren’t very good as though I have osteopenia, the results are virtually full blown osteoporosis.
