Hi
I have just found an insurance policy of mine (pay in every month but never use!) which entitles me to a private specialist consultation but not private treatment. Does anyone know if I have a private second opinion would I still be entitled to radiotherapy on the NHS?
Cathy
If you are merely going for a consultation, and not to put yourself into the care of the consultant, it should not affect your situation re the NHS.
When I was not entirely happy with what the onc. team was not saying or doing, I had a private consultation at the Marsden which provided information and advice, and subsequently decided to go private. Until I discharged myself from the clinic, NHS treatment continued.
I have private medical insurance through work which entitled me consultation and treatment. I had my initial consultation and all diagnostic tests plus my surgery done done private - this was more for speed than anything else.
My consultant then advised that I would be better to have my oncology and further treatments on the NHS as they can provide a fuller care plan with all the necessary professionals involved. He is actually part of the NHS team involved as he works a mixture of NHS and private work.
My oncology team is based in Falkirk and my rads are being done at the Beatson in Glasgow.
I will get follow-ups with both the consultant on a private basis and also the oncology care team on the NHS.
So … to answer your question then yes you can go private for part of the process and NHS for other bits.
Hi there I got a second opinion with a different consultant at my hosp. It was really simple and I am so glad I did it. The new surgeon made a wonderful job of my op. and took time to explain everything to me. It was the best thing I did changing my consultant.
Best wishes Alison
Hi Alison
Did you have to go privately to see the new consultant or just request a 2nd opinion?

I had a second opinion as I have IBC, and felt it was worthwhile seeing someone else
My GP just refered me to the Marsden, who saw me as an NHS patient

Hi Cathy
My breast nurse arranged for me to have a second opinion without the least bit fuss. We have three consultants two of which are excellent. I was also given the option of seeing a consultant at a neighbouring hospital. All of this was within the NHS.
Just wishing you all the best.

Hello Cathy,
My onc referred me to the London Marsden when I had a second recurrence.
I have IBC.
I am now seen by both my local onc and the Marsden, both as NHS.
