Has anyone had a single breast reconstructed?

Hello,
I received my results yesterday- grade 3- 2 tumours - 1, 2cm the other 1.3cm. They were a mixture of ductal and lubulor. No lymph node spread. This is my second diagnosis in 3 years. I have had radiotherapy on my other breast.
My consultant has advised a mastectomy of the breast with the new diagnosis.
Has anyone any experience of a single mastectomy and reconstruction? He is reluctant to touch the other breast at the moment given I have already had radiotherapy.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi there…sorry to hear your news.

I was diagnosed with DCIS in January 2015 and advised to have a mascetomy by my consultant…still in shock at the time I was so grateful that my husband was with me since he “soaked up” all the information that was given and became my ears. the consultant offered me right removal of breast followed by immediate reconstruction.  There are various types of reconstruction so after careful consideration I opted for using the muscle from my back. I was in hospital for 1 week , I’m not saying that it was not painful but if was bearable and providing you take your pain killers as directed things get better slowly.  6months down the line I have had my left breast uplifted, nipple replaced and in a weeks time the tattoo will be done…and as they say job done. No one likes to be in this situation but it’s a decision that you alone have to make as to regard to what type of reconstruction you want. Your consultant will obviously talk you through the options.  Thinking of your x

Thank you for replying Janet. I suppose my worry is that they will look so different that I will become self conscious of them. Which I know in the grand scheme of things is hardly important but I’m just trying to think of everything I can for the pros and cons x

I had a skin sparing mx, a temp implant whilst going through chemo, 6 months after last chemo temp implant was replaced with a permanent one, skin was trimmed as I went from a gg prior to mx to a small c. 6 months later I had the remaining boob reduced to match. Will get nipple made in Sept and later get it tattoos.
I’m very happy with the result in a Bikini you can’t tell - the lack of nipple when naked is a give away at the moment though ?
I’d wanted a boob reduction & sports car for my 50th, didn’t get the sports car & whilst I got my reduction it wasn’t quite the way I’d planned it lol.
Good luck with your treatment x

I was diagnosed with DCIS in several places in left breast in Jan and mx was recommended. Because they didn’t think there was node involvement I was offered immediate reconstruction and the surgeon talked through the various options. I decided to go for immediate implant using a mesh made of pigskin to support the implant. Although this carried an extra risk of rejection which I was quite paranoid about at the start, it meant that it was all over in one operation. Fortunately the surgeon made a very good job and even managed to save areola so I still have the appearance of a nipple. In a bra or bikini you wouldn’t know any different. Without the bra my natural boob droops more but I can live with that! I am now 5 months post op and still get some twinges and tightness in fake boob, apparently this can go on for about a year but I am becoming less aware of it as time goes on. Good luck with your decision. Xx
