I will be on the SOFT trial soon and if all goes well with the menopausal symptoms I will be having my ovaries out in 3/4 months time.

Anyone else doing this trial?

Hi Julie

How are the effects of ovary removal. Did you have and hormone therapy beforehand?

Hi Sam, I had my ovaries and fallopian tubes out in Oct 04 after being on Zoladex for 6 months. The op was fine, keyhole and home the same day. Had one cut in my tummy button, one tiny one near my hip and slightly larger one below the bikini line. Bit sore for a few days but back to work within 2 weeks so a breeze compared to everything else!!

Side effects - I don’t know why but haven’t had one hot flush and used to have dodgy skin but since ovaries out looks great. My periods used to be all over the place from 4 to 12 week intervals and then lasting for up to 2 weeks so have missed them like a hole in the head! Only thing I suffered with was migraines but after few months they went away - I am really prone to headaches anyway.

For me best thing I have done - I reckon - and this is only my opinion not based on any medical fact at all! - that as my cancer was er and pr positive, had awful periods and real trouble staying pregnant that I have alwaysad a real hormone inbalance and now they are gone feel so much better.

So good luck - I have also heard somewhere that for younger women having ovaries out is as effective as chemo for hormone cancer - moderetor might be able to back this up with proper stats/info?

Take care

BEST THING I EVER DID.

Had my ovaries removed in March. If anything, wished I could have had this done right at the beginning instead of zoladex and tamoxifen for 2 years. It must be your decision but I would say go for it.

Hi All,

I’m alittle concerned as I am now 12 months down the line - on 5 years of tamoxifen and 2 years zoladex injections. I asked my surgeon on Monday about having my ovaries removed. He wouldn’t entertain it saying that at my age (42) having my ovaries was far more beneficial to me than having them removed. He said he would think about it again when I go through the menopause naturally, which could be a long time away. I don’t want any more children so thought it wouldn’t be an issue having them removed.

Anyone else had the same experience

Thanks in advance for any comments
Take care

Thanks for that ladies!

Karen, my oncologist has been fab and agreed that after 3 months and seeing how I do with menopausal sypmtoms I can have my ovaries out.

Us ladies get a rough deal as it is and it was the thought of having this treatment for 5 years and then waiting for the real menopause that made my mind up that this was the way to go.

Karen maybe you should ask again as you’ll be saving money not using all those drugs!
