I have had two areas of pain due to bone mets radiated and my hip is now great but my back pain has persisted. After spinal xrays I have just discovered that I have a collapsed vertebrae and have been recommended for vertebroplasty.
Whilst you wait for other users to reply with their experiences you find it useful to call the helpline and speak to one of the breast cancer care nurses as they will be able to offer you more information. Please don’t hesitate to call if you would like to talk this through. The number to call is free phone 0808 800 6000 and the line is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturdays 9 to 2.
My wife had a similar situation. She developed hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine which resulted in heavy fractures to her spinal vertebrates and a loss of 4.5" of height in the end. It bothered her alot, not just because of the effect on her body image, but because of the subsequent issues with clothes not fitting anymore, back pain as you mention and numerous other complications which resulted in the compression of her upper torso.
The people she was speaking to about the operation considered the option too risky for her and because of the weakness of her bones (mets) she was advised against it.
What they said about vertebroplasty in her case was that it invoves injecting cement into the verebral bodies and is useful for pain, but does not correct deformity. If you are looking for pain relief, I am pretty sure you are on the right track.
SHe was seeing a team of specialists about this at the Royal National Orhopaedic Hospital in the UK if that helps.
Thanks T for taking the time to reply. Yes I am looking for pain relief as I am in constant pain at the moment and have had very good advice from my oncologist. I wish your wife well. It is terrible when your bones become so fragile and I hope she finds a way forward that will help her.
Just a question for the moderator - why does this thread show as having 7 comments when you go to the list of discussions and only 3 when you go into it?
Anyone else out there who has had cement injected into a collapsed vertebra???
