Has anyone tried Herbatint Hair Colourant?

Was it any good, and did it stain the skin?
The reason I ask this is that since having chemo and Cyberknnife for skull mets, my hair has grown back very salt and pepper in colour, and I have three bald spots on the right side of my head (each is the size of a 50p piece). Throughout the winter I have been wearing wigs, but now its warmer, I’m finding wigs intolerably hot and itchy. Consequently, I’ve decided to grow my hair, in the hope that I can colour the salt and pepper, and use a stain to conceal the bald spots (hopefully if my hair grows long enough I will be able to conceal the bald areas).
I have done an internet search, and apparently this product can be used by cancer patients, as it doesn’t have para-dyes, or peroxide.

HI LG, the thing is it does contain PPD as does any permanent hair colour. Albeit to a lesser extent in something like Herbatint or Naturtint permanent colours.
I use Naturtint reflex range which is semipermanent and lasts for about a month. As I wash my hair everyday I tend to top up the root line in between. I order over the phone or internet as I’ve never seen it in the shops and my experience has been that they’re very reliable.

They state this is free from: parabens, PPD, peroxide, ammonia, and resorcinol.

Yes, it does stain the skin but that washes off by the first or second wash after you’ve applied. I’d say use a separate old towel for drying your hair the first few times as you will get staining on it.

Hi LG - I use Naturetint too - I buy it in Holland & Barrett. It works really well for me, and it fades a little to look rather like natural highlights - although I have to say I’m not really into hair so my demands are rather modest!

It lasts quite along time for me, as I’m a less frequent washer than Elinda. It does stain a little - my shade is mid brown - but not for long. Were you asking about staining because you wanted to use the hair dye to stain the scalp to cover the bald patches? If so, I don’t think Naturetint would work for that. Sorry - I wish I could think of something to help.

Thanks for the info Elinda and Finty. Have looked at the Naturetint website, and think I will go for the permanent one, rather than the semi-permanent, because they say the semi-permanent is only good for early stage grey hair, and mine is very pepper and salt in colour now. Also I was sort of hoping the colour would stain the scalp, so that I can conceal the bald spots, and maybe the permanent is better at that.

Just a thought - perhaps you could cover the bald spots with make up. If you got an eyeshadow, blusher or something like that near to your colour and used a damp brush to apply it, you could cover that way. Don’t know if that would work but might be worth a try.

I’ve read recently that some actors use a coloured cream to fill in gaps or even spray on hair to cover bald spots.
I had a quick look on the internet and found this link for spray on hair at £17.95 which comes in five colours. No idea what it would be like though. Probably lots of chemicals which you may want to avoid.

Unfortunately I don’t think any staining will last on the skin even if you use a permanent dye. Elinda x

Elinda thanks so much for taking the trouble to post this info for me. It’s a coincidence that you should say about using eye shadow, because I have been using a grey shade and it conceals things quite well. I have also bought some stuff called Topik, which has electrically charged fibres in it, so it sort of clings to the scalp and looks a bit like grey fluff (which is slightly better than just grey skin).
Unfortunately, the Restrand product won’t work, because in the areas treated by Cyberknife, my hair follicles were destroyed.
Thanks again.

Your very welcome. There are other products such as creams, this one comes from the States and this shows you all the details:

Quick search and I have found it is available in the UK in blonde and grey shades at £14.10

There are some reviews as well on the second link. Elinda x

Thank you for the info Tina. Fabulan foam only appears to be available in America, so I have just placed an order for a product called restrand, which apparently does the same thing (tints the scalp and thickens hair). the only downside is that it doesn’t appear to be waterproof like Fabulan, so I had to buy a spray to seal it in (will let you know how I get on).
