Have been asked to take part in trial of Tykerb and Herception.

Hi everyone

Went for my hospital appointment yesterday and was asked to go on a 4 arm trial for herceptin/tykerb and don’t know what to do.

Have always thought Herceptin was a safety net and worried that if I have the Tykerb I’ll regret it. The 4 arms are herceptin on its own; tykerb on its own; both together (which I would like) and 3 months of Herceptin and 9 months of tykerb.

Just read some past threads on Tykerb and look promising. My mind is in a whirl wondering what to do.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Liz

its a ver difficult decision to make isn’t it? I was offered a similar trial, and I got herceptin and tykerb together, which my onc thought was perfect for me, and now I’m really glad I accepted (my tumour has shrunk so much is not palpable anymore). You need to look at the alternatives, what would you be getting if you did not take part in the trial?

Good luck with your decision

Chiara

Hi Chiara

Thanks for replying. I have sat thought about this trial for many hours but have decided on having Herceptin is originally proposed. I think if it was definite I would get the Herceptin and Tykerb I would consider it. I have no secondaries and no tumour to shrink as this trial is for primary cancers. When I asked my onc what she would do she said she didn’t know ! So have made my decision although researched tykerb and I think it is a very good drug and would have it with herceptin. Apparently it goes to the brain whereas herceptin doesn’t which was a plus point.

What side effects did you have? I was told severe diarrrhoea, acne, hand and foot syndrome .
