having a CT scan after lymph nodes surgery -ouch

having a CT scan after lymph nodes surgery -ouch Been running round all week having scans and tests before starting chemo next Thursday
On the whole coping well -bone scan went well, echocardiagram done, bloods all done.
Then came the CT Scan…
coped well with drinking the liquid and then they took me through
Laid on the table and they said arms above head please
Well having just had lymph node surgery this was impossible for me and I said so. However it was insisted on and my arm was forced above my head. Spent the whole scan crying my eyes out with pain
It also didnt help that they then put liquid in my arms and said i would feel a hot flush. Well to me it felt like I have wet myself. In fact I was so convinced this had happened that tears flowed even faster.Once finished I could not have got out of their fast enough.
Been in increased pain since
I have to say it was the lowest moment ever so far since diagnose
Not looking forward to having another one in the future

Jools,

(((HUGS)))

That is appaulling…grrr!!

Surely they must have had patients before who have had lymph surgery and although it has to be done they could have been a bit more sympathetic.

When I had my first CT scan the radiologist warned me that when the liquid went in I would feel like I was wetting myself…why didn’t yours??

I do hope the pain subsides and please don’t fear the scan in future, when your not just recovering from surgery it doesn’t hurt at all.

Clare

Hi Julie,

Having a CT Scan is not painful when you are ‘well’ but in your situation it must have been awful !

I was told that the injection would make me feel like I had wet myself, and I was mortified when I had that feeling, even though I knew it was the injection, and not me weeing. How insensitive of the medical staff. Sounds like they need a reminder that they are actually dealing with people and not just the big white machine!!

Hope you’re feeling better very soon,

love,
Jacki xx

Hi Jools,
All the nurses, doctors, specialists have been excellent with me except the nurse doing the CT scan. I can really empathise with you as a similar thing happened to me.
She did tell me about the feeling of wetting myself but the idiot was insisting on giving me the dye injection in the arm where i had all my lymph nodes removed. i tried to tell her she couldn’t whilst she was insisting there was no problem. I was not going to let this idiot inject the wrong arm so absolutely refused to let her carry on unless she injected my other arm - she had no choice in the end but I felt I shouldn’t have had a full blown argument with her to get the job done right.
She had no thoughts for the pain I was in after the lymph node removal and grabbed both arms to put behind my haed - i like you was in agony. Thank goodness its only the one bad nurse I have encountered.

Oh dear, what a horrible experience for you.

I had a CT scan a week ago, two weeks after WLE on mastecomy scar!
(local recurrence)
I expalined I couldn’t raise my arm so soon after surgery and they were lovely. I was allowed to rest my arm on my shoulder.

They explained about the dye and the sensation to expect and I found it all so much easier than the MRI scans I have had previously.

Seems to me if one team can be so accommodating why can’t they all?

Hope you are feeling better,
Love
Jackie

ct scans Why are some people given ct scans and others not, since my diagnosis i have not had a ct scan once. Had all the usual ecgs and blood tests pre op but nothing since. Is this another case of depends where you live in the country to where you get offfered the most follow up, i had mastectomy and lymph node removal in my op jan 07 so would have really appreciated being followed up in this way just as reassurance that they had got rid of as much cancer as they possible could. Currently going through horrors of cmf chemo so do u think i will be offerred scans when all treatment eventually finishes, although at momemts feels like its never ending

Hi Mounties,

I finished 18 months of treatment in /Feb when i saw the onc for my 6 week post rads appt.

If I hadn’t pointed out the lump that had appeared on my scar line I would not have been given the U/S or CT scan. they are not routine follow ups at my local hospital.

The U/S showed nothing so I was biopsied again and this tested positive for cancer cells, and local recurrence wasdx. Onc then decided he wanted CT scan to regrade me.

Hope this helps
Love
Jackie
