Hi I had a bilateral mast in March 08 and am now waiting for reconstruction. The more I read about it the more confused I get. Originally I’d been led to believe I couldn’t get it from my back as it’s both sides so had in my mind that I was getting it from my tummy (tummy tuck and boob job yay!) Then I saw the ps two weeks ago and he said I could have it from my back and gave me the impression that he felt this would be a better option for me. He seemed to think that with the TRAM flap the risk of hernias later in life should be a concern. No one has ever mentioned having a DIEP flap until I was reading on this website but this seems a much better op. I just wondered if anyone who has had bilateral recon with any of these methods could give me any insight?
I’m about to have bilateral mastectomy and diep reconstuction on Thursday (Yikes)-so I might be able to help you after that-sounds as if they don’t do diep in the hospital you’re attending-ask about it as an option-lots of people seem to travel elsewhere for this operation-none of this is simple, you have time on your side, to research it all, see other people if necessary and them make the right decision for you. Good luck.
