Headstrong axed

I was very saddened to hear that BCC are axing their HeadStrong service.  I recently signed up to be a volunteer for this service as I was so upset with the prospect of loosing my hair when I faced chemotherapy and felt I could be very empathetic.  I am rostered to do my first session with clients next week so I have yet to see the worth the sessions have on cancer patients but I think if I had known about the service I would have found it very helpful.

Are there any thoughts from fellow volunteers or clients who have used this service?

Hi strawberryblond,

I am really sorry to hear of your disappointment. Thank you for volenteering to support women who are facing one of the biggest challenges of their lives – breast cancer.

Sadly, from the end of June 2016 we will no longer be able to continue to run headstrong. Please rest assured, though, that we plan to incorporate support and information about hair loss and much more into our Moving Forward courses.  We want to do what we do best. So, we plan to channel our resources into the services that have been shown to make the biggest difference from day one.

We are hopeful that many hospital and centres will take over the running of these hair loss services, which would mean that volunteer roles would be unaffected.

If you have any concerns – or if you’d like to discover the many other ways in which you can give your valuable time to Breast Cancer Care – please contact Volunteer.Hub@breastcancercare.org.uk.

Best wishes,

Lizzy
