Hi my name is Caroline, I am 3 weeks post mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy for DCIS in my right breast. I have just had biopsy results which show there is no spread and I am waiting on a date for radiotherapy. I know there is still swelling but the numbness and pain under my arm to elbow is what I feel the worst, anyone else experienced this, will it go away? I would appreciate any suggestions on how to help ease the discomfort x
Hi @carrie2402
Welcome to the forum and I’m so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I had a double lumpectomy last July. I had some swelling, pain and numbness but was told it is normal and the surgery can take 3 months to heal. The numbness is probably due to the nerves being moved about and that can result in pain but I’m not a medical professional.
If it was me I would call my breast care nurse or the BCN nurses * Helpline: 0808 800 6000 (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; Sat 9am-1pm). Speak to our trained helpline team. No questions are too big or too small.
Thank you, I will see how it goes in the next few weeks and give the nurses a call x
Hello Caroline. I’m sorry you are suffering such discomfort. The pain does go away but may take a few weeks as everything heals and settled down. Have you been given exercises to do as they really help even though they feel uncomfortable at the time. I’m afraid the numbness under the arm doesn’t go away, as my surgeon told me, the nerves have been cut. However, when evening else settles down it becomes less of a problem and you hardly notice it. I’m 5 years on and fine. But do speak to your BCN, that’s what they’re there for, or phone the Macmillan cancer care team. They’re brilliant and very helpful and kind. Best wishes.
Hi, yes I have been doing the exercises and feel they are helping. I will see how it improves iver the next few weeks, thank you for your comment x
