Hi there
I have secondaries in my liver and bones + nodules in my lungs. When I had my primary diagnosis the tumour was oestrogen and progesterone +ve and HER2 -ve.
Since my secondary diagnosis I have had various chemos which have worked reasonably well and 3 different hormone therapies which haven’t worked at all. I am booked to go into hospital tomorrow (thursday) to have a biopsy of my liver to see if the secondaries there are still hormone sensitive and also to look at my current HER2 status.
I was the one who initially enquired about it a couple of weeks ago, now it all feels like it is happening very quickly. (i had an appointment today and he said ‘right lets do it, ill book you in now’) This is probably a good thing but i am feeling a bit scared My onc said that it wasn’t an essential proceedure but that if I was her2 +ve a number of new treatment options would become available.
Has anyone else had this done? What was it like - was it very painful? Are there any questions i should be asking? Are there any other things they could (or should ) be testing for?
Thanks in advance for your help
Melissa
Hi Melissa
Not something I have had done myself but reading what others have said about the liver biopsy, it seems good to insist on sedation. Comments range from painful to uncomfortable but as with all these things, some women breeze through. As always, if there is some way to make something more comfortable - insist on it!
I’m sure there will be someone along soon who can give you more info. Good luck!

Hi Alesta
Thanks for the advice - I hadn’t really thought about sedation or not but I think I shall insist on it now
I have been reading a little bit about it and it seems that quite a few women find that their hormone status changes when they develop secondaries. Apparently it doesn’t necessarily change treatments so a lot of oncs don’t retest. I think I want to know what my status is so I’m glad that my onc is happy to get the mets tested.
