my mum had a full left mastectomy last june. This summer she seems to be really strugaling on finding clothes to wear. She is still very concious of her scarin, both under her arm and what people maybe able to see when she leans forward.Does anyone have any suggestions of places to shop etc.It does seem to now be depressing her that she doesn’t like anything she tries on. Any help would be wonderful. thanks x x
I’m sorry your mum and you are having to face this terrible disease. I am 55 and had a left Mx in September last year. I have bought some different types of tops to overcome the clevage problem. I have some post surgery bras from places like M&S with a modesty panel in the centre of the bra. Also I have purchased some higher necked strappy tops, they are available from most shops including the supermarkets and I wear them under my tops.
The underarm scars are not as visible as we think they will be to others.
Good luck with the future
thanks for that.I keep trying to reasure her that her scars are not visable but she is very concious of them.As she is bigger busted(size d) she feels like everything she wears gapes at the front so she talks herself out of everything.I wish i could give her alittle confiedence boost but shes just not liking anything. We have tried going to all shops such as m and s,next etc to asda and tesco but still no joy. I will keep persisting to try and find some with her just wish we could find some soon so she feels alittle better.
In all honesty Rooties it is a problem finding the right clothes - it really is a case of trial and error. I have only recently discovered the joy of bras with a modesty panel - they really help with that gaping problem. An alternative is to wear a lacy camisole over the top of your bra. Bit hot at the moment but it will be ok once the weather cools down a bit.
One of the women here uses that special sticky tape you can buy to help stick your clothes to your chest so that you don’t get the gape.
I’m sorry I don’t know the name of it - hopefully she will be along soon to tell you what it is!
thanks for the help.gonna look for the bras and see what they are like.thanks again
Glad I found this thread even though I didnt have a mx I had lumpectomy and the scar really shows if I wear anything lowish. The scar is so purple and doesnt seem to be fading
Didnt know about the modesty panel bras. Did a search on ebay and found some panel things you can clip to your existing bras.
Hopefully they do what they say this will do and hopefully I will be able to wear some of my old tops that I had pre cancer days
Hi Rooties, I use a camisole top with a built in pocketed bra. It’s cut so it doesn’t gape when leaning over- a problem I’m aware of as I work with young children. It can also be worn on its own as strappy top. From nicola jane I think, available in a range of colours. Also i just wear camisoles form M&S or tesco under normal clothes. Seems to do the trick.
Scar seems to be helped by bio oil. Was on special offer at tesco, not sure if that has finished.
Take care
