I wanted to ask if anyone else has my experience of pain on the site of the mastectomy more than two years after the operation? It is not constant, although minor discomfort is fairly constant.

Hi,
I suffered with constant and fairly severe pain from mx from 3 months post surgery to the time I had further surgery earlier this year. I was referred to the pain team and diagnosed with post mastectomy pain syndrome. Apparently it is qute a common problem, but many women are not informed of this possibility when the need for a mx is being discussed. I ended up using tramadol 100mg 4 times a day and emla cream 3 times a day and this did give me some relief. I was already on amitriptyline for sciatic nerve pain. Luckily for me the next lot of surgery which involved operating on my recon improved my situation no end, but before my surgery I was informed that there was no guarentee that surgery would improve the pain. There is a previous thread regarding post mastectomy pain syndrome which you may find interesting and helpful, but I would recomend that you contact your team at the hospital and ask to be referred to the pain team and see if they can help.
