Hi
How long is reasonable for biopsy results for Her + ??
Cheers
Annie
Hi Annie
In my experience (I’ve had 2 liver biopsies done, a few years apart) it can take a few weeks. One of the last ones, where the sample was sent off to a lab up North, it took a month or more. Keep chasing, or getting your oncology team to chase the labs. I think there’s only a few that do the tests and if the initial result is a 1 or a 2 they need to carry out another test, called a FISH or DDISH test, to determine whether you are actually HER2+ or not. For info (and something I’ve learnt over the years) HER2 is present on all BC cells but it is when there is an over-expression of this protein that it is decided whether you are HER2+ or not. A ‘0’ means not, a ‘1’ or ‘2’ means its indeterminate and a ‘3’ means you definitely are. This is done by checking the biopsy to see how many protein cells are present in the sample. If a ‘1’ or ‘2’ is recorded they need to check the DNA of the sample and find out the score - anything between 0 and 6 - although I don’t know what the ‘score’ is called, I just know from my own experience and by looking on line about what its all about.
