Herceptin and brittle nails

Hi,

Does anyone know of any nail product that actuallly helps or works for brittle/splitting nails. My mum’s using a Sally Hansen nail treatment but dont think it’s helping. Has anyone tried OPI Nail Envy?

Thanks

Hi,

Did your mum have chemo? It’s probably that which is causing the nail problem. I have been on Herceptin and am due my last one this week. I found that my nails produced a line across for every dose of chemo and as they grew out my nails were very delicate so I had to keep them short. I have not had any problems for the past 4 months as the lines are now gone. All through my chemo I used nail oil about 3 times a day and that helped a lot. My daughter very kindly bought me some from Champneys but I am sure that any nail oil would do as well.

Hi
I have been on herceptin for five years (nearly) and my nails are a mess - but I was told originally that it wasn’t the herceptin causing splits and ridges so I was very interested to read this post. Obviously it is the herceptin after all!
I have to say my kind friend, who knows about nails, has tried a variety of nail treatments on me but none of them are working particularly. I think what is working best at the moment is not immersing them in water too often (use rubber gloves) and being very lavish with the hand and nail cream. Now that I have got into the habit of rubbing oily hand/nail cream into the nails several times a day their appearance has improved more than when I was painting them with expensive nail protectors…
Hope that helps

Hi,
Justy,
That is interesting. I guess I have just been lucky that the Herceptin has not affected my nails.

Hi, I just wanted to say that through chemo my nails were fine, until I started Herceptin, they were thin, splitting, flaky and weak. I hated them as ive always had really good strong nails. I finished Herceptin in December and over the past 6 weeks or so they have come back normal. Nothing I tried to save them worked at the time, so I just cut them all off, looked horrid but light at the end on the tunnel.

Hi
Like Ness1 my nails were fine during chemo except for ridges which finally grew out. My herceptin finished in December 09 and my nails are still very weak and break off once they grow yet my toe nails are as strong as before… have tried different nail hardeners etc but nails remain very soft and brittle…false nails are nice but hard to maintain…Any tips or advice welcome.

I have been on chemo thereapy and hercepting since January 2010. I am now just taking herceptin and arimidex. My nails are a mess…They appeared to be getting better, but have now started to peel big time…in fact last nite, I lost half a nail!! Can anyone give me any suggestions as to how I can remedy this (if there is a remedy)? Thanks for any advice!

Hiya - yes same here - finished chemo in March and my nails break and are all lumpy - going on Friday to get gels - acrylics are too harsh but gels I hope will give my own nails the time to recover without breaking. I’ll keep you posted.

Hi

Whilst I was having my chemo, my nails - hand and toe - went quite discoloured.

That went away after the chemo finished and although I am not on herceptin my nails are still very weak.

I find sweet almond oil works really well. It is also recommended by the Holland and Barrett “HEALTHY” magazine. There was an article on nails in there a couple of months back.

I hope this helps.

Luv to you all

Very helpful - thanks! I will buy some sweet almond oil - worth a try! Thanks

I finished chemo including taxotere in Dec 08 and Herceptin in November last year. My hair and nails have only just returned to something like normal over the last two months. However hair is very very dry. Am taking Arimidex as well.

Hi again,

Does anyone know if Herceptin can cause nail discolouration?

Thanks alot,

I had Herceptin for a yr but I didnt find it too cause probs with my nails. The taxotere was bad for that, the great news is that my hair and nails are doing great now a yr down the road. Hope this give u some light.

Take care

Hi,

I am not on herceptin but I found that Almond oil Really worked on my brittle nails after chemo. Unfortunately I hadn’t heard about it before treatment otherwise i am convinced i would not have had the problems i did have during treatment. Hope this helps.

Good luck
