herceptin and tamoxifen

hi i wonder if anyone can help a worried me out. i am shortly to start fec chemo then tamoxifen and herceptin but i have just read on here tamoxifen doesn’t work with herceptin. can anyone explain this for me or tell me if they are on both. i am worried enough. i will see if i can find thread again and ask person as well but thanks all in advance
well i am hoping to get replies

Hi Julie I have just posted on He2 thread to say I know other woman who are prescribed herceptin and tamoxifen, it just depends on your status. Don’t worry as its quite common, I am sure other women will post to let you know.

Lots of people on this site have tamoxifen and herceptin. And lots of us take Arimidex (instead of tamoxifen as we are post menopausal) and have herceptin. Please don’t worry. Good luck with your chemo.

I am having tamox and herceptin - normal. they target different things, have different ways of acting and do not contraddict each other… don’t worry.

Hi Julie,
I’m on both too. The only thing i can remember being told that doesn’t ‘mix’ with herceptin was FEC. I ended up switching to taxol so i could have it at the same time as herceptin. Maybe that is what you’re thinking of?

Hi Julie

I think there was some research done a while back which seemed to show that women on both Tamoxifen and Herceptin did not do as well, I think there was some concern that this was as both were attaching to receptors and therefore interfering with each other. However, I asked my onc about this who said that the research had never been replicated in other studies so it was something that I should not worry about, basically it was an american study and she thought there was some concern that the women taking part in the study were not even all oestrogen positive! hope this helps, other people may know more than this!

just to add my ten pence worth, I’m 35 and I’m on Tamoxifen, Zoladex and Herceptin. I know of many people who are on hormone therapy along with Herceptin,
