I have just had all chemo stopped duecto an allergic reaction to my 2nd docataxel and am now just having herceptin. Surgery planned for end march early april.
Can i now swim run etc as i want to maintain my fitness as its what keeps me positive…i not getting much info from the oncoligist…
I ran all the way through treatment (surgery/chemo/rads/herceptin). I stopped swimming through chemo because of the dangers of infection, but restarted once the chemo was over. I am positive that exercising helped me through it all, and helped my recovery. I would advise anyone going through treatment to exercise, whatever they can manage. No matter how tired I felt (and believe me, chemo wore me out, as did the year of herceptin) exercising always made me feel better. Immediately after surgery (mastectomy) I went out on walks - just down the street and back to begin with, gradually building it up from there. I think I was running again after about three weeks. Reconstructive surgery three years later took longer to recover from as the anaesthetic took its toll.
Wow you are both amazing! I had a bad reaction to doxatacel too and then had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic for my surgery and to the steroids I was given for the colitis I got from the chemo. To cut a long story short (and quite a few hospital admissions)the whole lot left me with problems with the nerves and muscles of my hip and knee joints and hardly able to walk, stand or get up from a seat. Once I was 6 weeks past my radiotherapy I was told I was allowed to have hydrotherapy which I am having at my local hospital. I am also on herceptin which I am told by my oncologist can have a depressing affect on the immune system (indeed I have had one more hospital admission and intravenous antibiotics for cellulitis a month ago) but there is no reason why I cannot swim. I only 42 and used to be really quite sporty and loved playing squash before diagnosis so I am keen to start swimming again as soon as I can get in and out of the local pool safely. I am now walking with a stick and making slow progress but it’s all in the right direction. Wishing you all the best -enjoy your swimming!
