herceptin side effects or brain mets?

hi all
was wondering if anyone had a similar experience to me. i have had 5 doses of herceptin so far which i think i have dealt with ok. but about a month ago i had lots of little incidents start.

  1. my scalp felt tender in 3 places when i was playing with my hair. at first i thought it was sunburn from a recent holiday but it is still there. i finished chemo end of may…could it be because my hair is still growing.
  2. i have headaches but they are not severe…just constant
  3. i have funny sensations in my head 2 or 3 times a day for a few seconds
  4. i have a dizzy spell every 3 days but only for a second or two
  5. and about every 3 days i have zigzag flashing in my eyes for about 5 minutes

i went to the gp and she ruled out an ear infection and high blood pressure so she is arranging a brain ct scan…just to be sure she says. i’m hoping it is something to do with the herceptin.

can anyone relate to theses symptoms with either brain mets or herceptin

many thanks in advance

Hi bbbb,

I have been on herceptin for a few years now. Last year I had a brain scan because i was getting headaches and nausea for several weeks - but all was O.K. I have had odd sensations in my head too, and the zigzag flashing in my eyes which I am told is a form, of migraine. But your gp is absolutely right to arange that brain ct scan. For your own peace of mind you need to eliminate that possibility. I hope like me you are told all is well. My symptoms eased off after having the scan so I suspect the stress we live under also contributes. Good luck

I read you post and thought Id had written it.

It starte in August with funny eye sensations - went to Optician - nothing there. But have rec ently develope heaaches - again not very sore but constant – docs think I may have problems with my calcium levels. Still to get blood tests. Im not dizzy but my balance and sight not good

I am on herceptin and zometa so concerne with brain mets as its one of the few areas not to be scanne - let me know how you get on will you.

hi dawn and kate
well thats a relief i must say… i forgot to mention the nausea too. i will let you know the results of the scan tho i don’t have an appointment as yet. hopefully it won’t take too long

dawn how long was it before the symptoms went away? i am concerned with the dizzy spells due to driving as part of my job.

regards karen

I have sore areas on my scalp too and I get the zigzag patterns. I thought that was due to too much computer use, to be honest. I get migraines but the disturbed vision I get then is entirely different.

All the best
Anne

I’m on Herceptin and have terrible problems with my eyesight, blurred vision and my eyes twitch constantly which is really annoying. I don’t know if this is SE from chemo. I get funny shapes in my eyes, but only for a few minutes first thing in the morning.

Hi bbbb,

I cant really remember but I think I had been experiencing the headaches and nausea on and of for several weeks. After the brain scan it was probably a couple more weeks.

I have had a tender scalp for about a year and my eyes have never been the same since chemo started in January 2007. My eyes are blurred and wonder if that is due to having very few eyelashes.I have had herceotin finished that at the end of July. My eyes water so much I get a rash round my eyes. Should go and have it checked but I have this strange reluctance to go to doctors. Can’t seem to get the energy to go… love Eileen

Yes-very tender and itchy scalp (which I try not to scratch too much!) But it’s so uncomfortable that the only relief I get is standing in the shower and letting the water flow over it-and I can’t do that for too long! I’ve noticed too that I’m more headachy that ever I used to be-not severe enough to need pain relief-although occasionally take something-but pretty constant.

Hi all

Relieved to hear I’m not the only one suffering with itchy sore scalp. Have just had number 13 herceptin and have been with suffering with this for several months. GP prescribed antibiotics but no change. Just wish I could stop scratching.

I agree Jordan -I’m using simple shampoo-tried baby shampoo but was advised against it-and the only temporary relief is shortly after washing it. Mabe I’ll just have to wash my hair 3 or 4 times a day. I’m actually at the stage of considering shaving it all off again, in the hope of that helping-I’d at least be able to put on some cream too. Sounds like a bit of a drastic step though!
