High Ferritin

Hi, I was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma in January 2023. I’ve had WLE, radiotherapy and I’m currently on tamoxifen. I’ve had ongoing pelvic and back pain over the past year that is getting progressively worse. I think it may be related to tamoxifen but that could just be a coincidence. I was seen by gynae who found a small cyst but nothing of concern. My GP has taken my blood a few times and discovered that my ferritin level is climbing (well outside normal range). None of my other inflammatory markers are raised. I have read that raised ferritin is associated with malignancy (amongst other things). I spoke with a breast care who said she said she would discuss it with the team. I am very worried about the rising ferritin levels and I’m wondering if I should request/pay for a CT chest, abdomen and pelvis?

Hi MillieMarbles

Thank you for your post.

It’s understandable you’re worried about your rising ferritin levels and are wondering about having further investigation.

It’s very natural to have concerns about recurrence after breast cancer. Nearly everyone who has been treated for cancer worries about it coming back and you’re not alone in being anxious about this. The uncertainty and fear of breast cancer returning is very real.

You will see on the above link that there are, as you say, other things that may cause a raised ferritin level. Sometimes when certain organs like the liver are under increased stress due to treatment or previous damage, ferritin levels can be raised. As you may be aware, tamoxifen can sometimes cause changes in how the liver works although this is usually temporary and resolves when treatment finishes.

It’s good to read you’ve already let your breast care nurse know about your rising ferratin levels and are waiting for a response from your treatment team about the possible reason for this.

It’s important too that you let them know you have been having back and pelvic pain that has been getting progressively worse. They will be able to assess and discuss how your symptoms are affecting your daily life and if necessary, can arrange for further investigation.
