Hip and shoulder pain - IDC

Hi guys.

I have had a lumpectomy and Axillary clearance (invasive Ductal Carcinoma 10/14 lymph positive left breast)

I am due to start my chemotherapy Monday.

Has anyone else had bad hip and shoulder?.

The pain is in my left hip/bum cheek and my right shoulder/arm. I can barley lift my right arm unless I assist with my left arm, which has baffled me as the surgery was on the left.

Feeling worried / afraid, has anyone had these symptoms, I’m scared that it has spread?

If I’m honest it sounds more like some sort of musculo- skeletal injury or more than one injury possibly trapped nerves . Have you had a fall or injury in the last few months - sometimes the injuries become apparent later on. However I’m not a Dr. and without examining you nobody can say for sure. I think you should contact your GP . However I do think you should contact your treatment team before starting chemo and tell them about it anyway . I have had similar injuries including while I was having treatment but have always been able to pin it down to other causes - although sometimes a " but what if …" does creep in . So sorry that you are experiencing this - I understand your anxiety xx

Hi @kjg

It’s possible your aches and pains are from being moved about in theatre and off and on trolleys.

Give your BCN a call and she’ll advise.

Hopefully a couple of anti-inflamatory tablets will help relieve the pain until it settles down.

I understand that every ache and pain and twinge amd niggle makes you so paranoid it’ll have spread. You’ll eventually be less worried about this - although the worry with every new episode never 100% goes away.

Try to do some gentle exercise - walking is never a bad thing and is a fab way to clear the mind too.

Hope it clears up soon and all the best for the rest of your treatment.

@JoanneN I thought this initially maybe I was tense etc after surgery cautious that I didn’t catch my breast etc. I have been taking co-codamol and it doesn’t ease the pain at all. Haven’t had no fall or injury either. My GP are a nightmare and can’t get sense from them
@Gelbel I wasn’t too bad straight after surgery it’s been the last few weeks and pain getting worse not better.

I managed to speak to the nurse yesterday, she has been on the case to my GP and had me oramorph prescribed to see if that helps with the pain (been struggling to walk / move the last few days but still been moving etc as don’t want it to get worse)

My BCN spoke to my consultant and they have done a referral now for a Bone scan, hopefully that will rule out worse case scenario :crossed_fingers:t2:

I thought I would be well etc before chemo so I could do things with the kids but didn’t expect to be feeling like this.

Thank you both for reaching out. :revolving_hearts:

It does make you so Anxious/paranoid of the worse. Hopefully the new medication and the bone scan will get to the bottom of it.

It is possible ( though very uncommon ) for injuries to occur during anaesthetic sadly - if your positioning wasn’t done correctly. The way you describe it as a diagonal injury is making me think it’s an injury and if your scan doesn’t turn up any useful information I would continue to push to be investigated .
At our support group the Lymphoedema Nurse said that occasionally Lymphoedema can occur on the opposite side as if your body can’t drain it from the he affected side it sometimes shunts it across - I’ve actually seen that happen . If you have swelling there it could be a possibility for your arm and shoulder .
I hope that your scan excludes your worst fears and that you get some relief from the pain soon . Perhaps when you go for your chemo you could persuade them to look into it further . xx

Hi @kjg

First of all welcome to the forum

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing pain.

I was told by an osteopath that during surgery they do move you about and that can have repercussions during your recovery. My friend who’s a theatre nurse confirmed that as well.

I had bilateral breast cancer and this was the case for me.

It sounds like you are contacting the relevant people

Hope your recovery from the operation and ongoing treatment goes smoothly

Take care

@JoanneN That’s good to know about the lymphodema as I wasn’t aware it could shift to the other side.

Will definitely keep pushing etc and hopefully it’s nothing to serious

I have my pre assessment today before chemo Monday so will mention today also.

Hope you are keeping well
Thanks again x

Hi

I’m ok thank you. I’m a couple of years down the line now just navigating side effects of letrozole and obviously withdrawal symptoms from HRT when I was first diagnosed.

Hope all goes well today. You’ll be able to ask some questions today.

Sending best wishes for the chemo

Take care
Lynn

Sorry to hear you’re going through this and I completely understand your anxiety.

I also had a lumpectomy and axillary clearance on my left side (IDC, 15 lymph nodes removed). I remember having a painful neck and shoulder afterwards on the right side. It took a couple of weeks before it started to ease.

I hope your chemo goes as smoothly as possible.

Take good care
