Has anyone gone abroad for a holiday in between surgery and radiotherapy?
I’m 10 weeks post surgery, healed really well and due to start radiotherapy in about 5 weeks. We thought it might be nice to go away for a week in the sunshine before radio starts as aware it will be some time after before we can travel. Has anyone else done this?
My breast surgeon said I’m safe to fly and I will check with my radiotherapist before booking anything
The only thing I would say is to check out that you are covered by your insurance company - one of the questions they always ask is ‘are you waiting for any treatment’ and whatever it is, the computer seems to say no, or add a big figure onto the premium.
We cancelled our hols on diagnosis last year but even post surgery and not awaiting treatment, they added £100 premium on because I had had breast cancer in the year, and another £40 for the high cholesterol which my GP says is due to the letrozole and won’t even offer statins for it.
Anyway, hope you have a fab holiday whenever you get away xx
Hello . I didn’t go abroad between surgery and radiotherapy but went abroad 6 weeks after finishing radiotherapy. If I remember correctly, the insurance provider asked for confirmation that atleast 4 weeks would pass between finishing radiotherapy and travelling. My treatment team were happy for me to go. I just had to use factor 50 to protect my skin and keep up with skincare/moisturising etc.
Hi, I did. I went about 2 weeks before I started radiotherapy and it was brilliant as I was getting a port and going back on chemo after radio too so it was my only chance to escape for a bit! Just made sure I got the right insurance. I used AllClear, who were very reasonable. I know others that used Insurance With too. I just asked my oncologist/BCN if I was ok to fly to go a hol like you did and they said yeah so I did. Didn’t need to ask the radiotherapy team
Thanks I’ve had an insurance quote from insurancewith which was set up by a lady who had breast cancer. The quote was reasonable. Thanks for your reply x
Hi, I went to Italy on holiday last year before radiotherapy started. I actually put my radiotherapy start date back a week so I could go as I didn’t want to wait until 6 weeks after. Really needed a break and so did my partner and kids. Insurance was reasonable and we had a great time.
Hi, glad to hear you had a great holiday. I am planning to do the same. Am due to go away next week (7 weeks post surgery) and told that my radiotherapy 5 days would be 2 to 3 weeks away so ok to travel. The oncologist was not concerned about me getting some sun before the therapy.Did you totally cover up or wear a high suncream factor?
Hi, a bit of both really. I had had chemo so my hair (which I had shaved to a buzz cut) was still really short and a bit sparse so I got myself a few caps to wear to protect my head. They tied at the back so covered my neck too. I bought a couple of floaty blouses to keep myself covered up but didn’t make me feel too hot or restricted. I still used a high factor cream too. I also bought a sleeved swimsuit to keep my armpits covered.
