Hello, has anyone taken Citalopram 10mg to help with hot flushes? My oncologist has prescribed it but reading about the side effects I’ve scared myself!
I was on Zoladex and Tamoxifen and the hot flushes settled after a few months to just one or two a day. I Had my ovaries out 4 months ago and I’m now on Letrozole. My hot flushes are between 5 and 8 each night with a couple in the evening too. So my sleep is very disturbed from them as the hot flushes are really intense. If you have taken Citalopram how did you get on with it ?
xx
Hi, I’m on citalopram (20mg) but for depression. I started taking it after stopping my tamoxifen, so to be honest, I don’t know if the hot flushes stopping are due to the tamoxifen stopping or the citalopram…
I’ve just remembered that when I started on tamoxifen 5 years ago I was also taking citalopram at the time, and I still had the hot flushes, so it really depends on the person.
As for the citalopram side effects, ignore the paperwork… they are my life-saving medication.
I took Mirtazapine from Nov - Feb whilst I was on chemo, they stopped the night sweats really well. They have a sedative element too so my sleep was also better. However they are known to make you gain weight (I put weight on) and after chemo had ended I hated the groggy feeling I was getting every morning, so I stopped taking them.
Ive now been prescribed Fluoxetine, I’ve been taking them for nearly 2 weeks and the night sweats seem to be lessening. I have noticed that alcohol is definitely a trigger for the sweats so that’s something I’m monitoring too.
My GP did say they could take a few weeks to work.
