Hot flushes - Gabapentin

Hi all,

I’ve been to see my GP today because I’ve decided I can’t continue having the hot flushes that ive been having on the regular. I’m going to try Gabapentin but I’ve noticed on the prescription a warning that it may cause drowsiness. Has anyone else tried this or is anyone using it and if so have you found it best to take at a particular time of day?

Hi @KChest,

Sorry to hear that you have been finding your symptoms so unmanageable. I hope your doctor can manage to find you something that will you some relief!

We have some information on hot flushes and Gabapentin on our website here Hot flushes and night sweats | Breast Cancer Now which also details that fatigue is a possible side effect and that taking it at night may help with this.

Hopefully others can offer you their experiences with taking this, and you can also talk it through with our nurses on our helpline on 0808 800 6000.

Sending all the best,

Alice

I was prescribed it for pain but found out by accident that it helped with hot flushes too. It did make me sleepy at first and a bit zoned out it will depend how sensitive you are to the drug the side effects wear off as you adjust to the meds . The second time I tried the drug I built it up the dose very slowly and this seemed to significantly reduce the side effects . Hope it works for you .

I had these for pain management before cancer hit, stopped taking them during my treatment but won’t go back on them as they made me gain a lot of weight,I take Co-Codamol now

I take Gabapentin 3 times a day starting off at a low dose and gradually increasing. After the first week I didnt really notice drowsiness only when I am particularly tired for other reasons. I do appreciate that everybody is different but give it a try.
